FWIW, its all done now -harness and advice from Dave (SVXDC), and a fair bit of sweat, tears and curses. All difficulties were physical R&R , no electrical issues.
After finding the HU had 4 line outs, I could have run these to the Mc connector, if we had one to match, and knew the pin outs. Hard part was getting the new cableing under the carpet down under pax seat - had to remove the seat in the end. I tried to fit an iPOD adapter, but there was such an excess of cabling with it I gave up on trying to fit it all in behind the HU.The tunnel cover was a bit of an issue, as releasing the main wiring plug was a bugger with it clipped to the cover, and then there was an air duct screwed to the cover such that you couldnt reach the aux in plug , and I had to remove the duct first - a few acrobatics required. I have left the Mc cabling in place - got no idea where it runs,dont even want to think about it. BTW, the single din cubby is 66128ae000, from Japanparts.
This is the dual zone ac version also.
And as hoped, sound is better already. All I have to do now is get a small amp to drive the Sub, and its done.
Thanks Dave.
Update for Dave - the aerial input to the Mc HU is 2 round pins, in a plug ~1/2" dia

Do you mean size or power of the standard sub?

size = 8inch
power = 35 watts if i remem correctly.

I am sure an aftermarket amp will be too much for the stock sub but let us know how you go. I just upgraded my sub to a Kenwood KFC-800W (150rms watts) for $180 off RYDA.COM I think it's definitely worth considering upgrading the sub.

Thanks for that. By 'upgraqding the sub' do you mean the speaker itself, or the amp side? I am looking at a JVC amp that quotes 65W RMS output for a simiiar price that you quoted. The HU has a sort of level control for the Sub from 0-6 or similar IIRC.

Note that I have removed the Mcintosh amp altogether, and currently have nothing connected there at all. Just the new HU;s sub outputs ready to feed an amp.

I meant upgrading the speaker itself... Not sure how much the stock sub will be able to handle, u might just have to keep the gain low when you hook up an aftermarket amp until you get a new subwoofer. Then you will get the full potential out of your system.

The JDM double din facia kit costs ~$400 landed (assuming A$ stays high). Since I already had the JVC HU, $0 there, but thats your choice- JVC do several models of DVD players down to ~$400. I had forgotten that the HU had both speaker outs and line outs - (I could have run the line outs direct to the Mc amp), but I had a cable made (SVXDC on legacygt.com) for ~$40, which goes from the speaker out RCA connectors to the speaker plug under the pax seat. This made it very easy to connect, except for actually lacing the cable down the tunnel and under the seat - had to remove the seat to do it. However you connect a HU you are going to need an adaptor from your HU to the suby connector - Aerpro make a whole range, and a Suby one is in there, only a few $ IIRC.
