All auto's have a stall converter otherwise it wouldn't be an auto. I think you mean a "high" stall converter but as pointed out, 3200 factory is pretty decent :)

I was getting 4k in mine :) with the stock turbo not sure if the sticky tracked helped.

Also that was with brake and hand brake.

So general consensus seems to be the old foot on brake while revving. Tried that but still not that quick off the mark...but admittedly I was a bit conservative and wasn't on boost.

So has anyone tried revving it to +3-4k rpm in neutral and then flicking it into drive? Or is this going to kill the transmission?
Started with a Gen2 Outback, then got a MY07 GT Spec.B Manual w Cat Back Exhaust and Verso Tuned, now got 2 kids and a MY07 GT Auto Wagon, Ultrex stealth back exhaust, panel filter, Whiteline Sways all round, Spec.b struts and springs and Kido-Tuned.

That is the quickest way to destroy your planetary gearset. DO NOT do this.
Stalling up is the kindest way on the transmission and driveline as they torque converter is doing its job and when you release the brake, the torque comes on smoothly, not in any sudden impacts.

Think about it, if you had a manual, would you give it 4k then sidestep the clutch? No because you'll burnout the clutch very quickly. However in this case, you dont have a clutch to take the impact, the gears (planetary set) will.

But you are right, an auto will never launch that hard. It simply can't be done in these cars due to the very tall first gear meaning you will ALWAYS be slow till around 4-5krpm (50-60kph) when you feel the rush kick in ;)

Thanks everyone. Nice finish from Hotwire.

Hopefully this thread will get some good views as I wasn't able to find anything else like it on the interwebs.

I actually tried that technique the other night on my own but didn't have the guts to hold the accelerator cos I could hear the brakes crunching :?

You can't get done for speed if you only get up to 60km/hr. You can't get done for racing as it has to be dangerous.

For reference I was pulled over for this - accelerated at full throttle to the speed limit ie 0-80kmh. No wheel spin due to traction control + launch control despite 240rwkw. My exhaust db was on the limit as I had a street legal APS Stage 3 kit fitted to the car (so it moved quickly and reasonably quietly). The officer who served the ticket specifically called it "excessive acceleration." I looked it up at the time and found no references to it, attributed it to a judgement call by the cop. This was 8 years ago, Canberra Tuggeranong Parkway.

Stalling it in first gear can achieve 1 bar of boost.

In SA we just call it 'hoon driving'. Again, judgement call by the officer.

I would have been tempted to throw the rule book at him :P

My Auto TT Legacy used to launch nice and hard (when the TMIC wasn't heat-soaked)
Stall to 2600rpm, 12-13psi of boost.. WIN!

now i have a 6speed,
Handrake on,
rev to 5000rpm,
ease clutch to take up drivetrain slack
sidestep clutch and drop handbrake

i made my old housemates gen2 2.5 RX 4 wheel spin once. Shoulda seen his face.

I did it the evil way, dialled up 5-6k in N then dropped it into D. It was scary awsome :D

The "power" light now flashes on start up ...

I tried the auto-stalling method described above:

- Left foot firmly pressed down on the brake pedal;
- Rev the car to around 2,500rpm and hold for a second or two;
- Release brake

The car whips forward like there's no tomorrow. Getting my brother to time 0-100 runs it added half a second, no matter how inaccurate the testing method is it was pretty obvious it makes a huge difference and reduces lag quite a bit.

I only tried it three times and probably will never try it again unless it's at the drags as I don't want to do any damage to key parts.

As stated

Both feet down, sidestep left foot when desired.
