How to cut power supply to cd changer - 2007 Outback

2007 Outback

The factory stereo is one that has a 6 cd changer. The cd changer is now malfunctioning. It is on some repeated circle of trying to change the cd (can hear the motor behind the stereo). I tried to stop it by pulling the audio fuse, then went to Subaru and then an auto electrician about it. All said it will probably need to be replaced. And here's the kicker, none knew if an aftermarket stereo can be fitted into the space cause the factory stereo is built into the panel. Even Subaru didn't know this!!

Oh by the way, pulling the fuse cut power to the stereo but somehow the cd changer was still going. Must have it's own power supply. And the other weird thing is that even with the engine turned off and the key out of the ignition... it keeps going for awhile longer.

Would like to hear from anyone who has any thoughts/comments about this.
Has anyone ever replaced the factory stereo with an aftermarket?
Any ideas to kill (not permanently) the power supply to the cd changer?

Search is your friend mate.

Plenty of threads of people that have upgraded to an aftermarket stereo.

You just need a fascia kit which is about $400 + the headunit of your choice (Email Michael at forumparts@gmail.com for a quote). Reason the fascia is so expensive is that its a genuine subaru part, and it comes complete with new heater controls (since the current ones are built into the current headunit).

Not too bad when you consider that Subaru would charge at least $500 for a replacement unit.

Oh and if you want to cut power to the headunit, take the grey side panels off from the left and right sides of the headunit, unscrew the headunit, slide it out and unplug it. The changer gets power for longer because if you hold the eject button while the key is in ACC or On position, it will go through each CD position and eject the disc. And this continues if you move the key to OFF after pressing the button.

Yeah I know. I spent so much time on the net with this problem. I got lazy by the time I got here.

So you have to remove the fascia to get remove the headunit? Is this removing power supply to the entire stereo - radio and cd? Do you know if the cd has it's own fuse, maybe I can just remove this.

Thanks. It's good to know the reason. Subaru was pretty much clueless on this problem.

Not sure if there is a fuse specifically for the cd player alone. I highly doubt it. It would be for the radio as a whole.

http://forum.liberty.asn.au/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=8395 About half way down there is a guide on removing the headunit. Not too difficult.

Once you remove the headunit, there should be a few plugs. The one at the very bottom connects to the heater controls, so leave that one alone. There should be one big connector, and a small square connector. Remove both of these.

I'll look in my manual and see if there is another fuse for the radio but I highly doubt it.
