Which fuel r u using?

I use
Caltex Vortex 98
BP Ultimate (98)
Shell V-power 98
Mobil 8000 (RON 98)

Mobil is my favourite but the vouchers take me to coles express.

There seems to be not much difference between all four.

I used Vortex premium 95 and united 98 they both returned over 11l/100km from the usual 8.8 l/km. Shell V-power racing was more expensive but had poor fuel economy.

Has anyone noticed how shell V-power racing fuel has vanished since the introduction of shell E10.

I think Subaru specifies the 3.0 prefers the 95RON fuel as, I think, in Australia "premium unleaded" fuel is defined as 95RON or greater

As coyote mentioned, freedom servos sell 98 E10. I have yet to try it but i do live right next to a huge freedom service station so possibly in the future.

I was advised by Shell Tech line and also 2 local Shell servos that this was due to the lack of tanks in the ground, that's all.
Most of the big servo's simply can support 4 fuels:
- E10
- Std Unleaded
- Premium Unleaded
- Deisel

The smaller ones really depends on the amount of real estate they have to bury tanks in but typically 3.

I'll check my books again but I always thought the pre MY07 H6 3.0R requires 98 RON only. However, others could be used for a short time if 98 RON is not available.

MY06 3.0R specifies 95 RON minimum.
Shell E10 is minimum 94 octane.
I've run a few tanks through mine, and it works fine.

You guys are right, it requires 95 RON, may be I was advised wrongly by the dealer.

I think I'll try 95 RON and see if I could save a few cents. 8.6L/100km is briliant for a car with "official" 12.5l/100km. I think the official fuel consumption for impreza 2.5 L is about 8.6L/100km.

Yes but the ECU will retard timing well before its audible to the human ear

So yes it'll knock, but only lightly till the ECU adjusts (almost immediatley) and grant you less power

Pinging/knock/det is always bad. There's no such thing as good knock, just the severity varies.
They put minimum fuel requirements on your fuel tank lid for a reason.

There are protective measures programmed into the ECU but they can't ward off all bad situations. If the car is running low RON fuel, high ambient temps, high load (eg: towing, up a hill in a high gear, towing a load or loaded up, high revs, etc), dusty environment (or anything that will reduce oxygen content in the air or the efficiency of the TMIC to do it's job), poor environment or other less than ideal conditions all push the ECU's ability to wind back the engine far enough to protect it.

Think of it this way:
- Correct fuel ~4-5c/l more expensive (maybe $2/tank/fill)

Engine rebuild due to detonation:
- ~$5000 +/-$1000 (more if done by Subaru themselves)

As I always come back to, using oil ~$50 more per fill or petrol 10c/l more is simply preventative maintenance and VERY cheap in comparison to a rebuild.

Have been running Shell V-Power 98 ever since i bought my car (couple of weeks ago), and decided to fill up with 95 last night just to see if i could notice the difference...Lacking a lot of power..Especially in low RPM...for example, with 98 i used to feel a specific pull at about 2200-2300rpm, where's now it's constant right through. Furthermore, from take-off, it lags like a bitch.

Safe to say i'll be filling up with 98 from now onwards.

I'm pretty sure they run lower compression in the 2.5 specifically so they can use the lower octane fuel.
