In my opinion, get a dealer to perform the major interval services (timing belt, etc, etc) - AS LONG AS YOU'RE HAPPY WITH THE PARTICULAR DEALER USED! - and do the minor services yourself. That way you get the "offical" dealer stamps in the logbook, which DOES help with resale, and you save some coin doing oil changes yourself.

anyone know the part number for a step colder plug? I was told by my mapper to change to heat grade 7 plugs when i put the new turbo in. Also are the standard plugs long reach? 22401AA630 aka NGK ILFR6B, are the plugs currently in the car.

Thanks

As is the omnipitent Buddah's way, I believe he is (not so) gently suggesting that you have posted your spark plug question in the wrong engine related section Dan
Now that I'm in North America, I'm greatly concerned about raised pick-up trucks and owners of wedge shaped vehicles. Seriously, not only do you have to be concerned about one hitting you in an accident, they stand a good chance of driving over you at the same time!

Jeez, the guy probably did a search for "spark plug" or "ILFR6B" and responded in one of the recent threads that came up. People give others grief for not searching and now you lot give hime grief for doing a search.

This is how I got it for under $600:
- Did oil, oil filter & air filter myself - got from supercrap on special (old air filter was putrid!)
- Cleaned cabin air filter myself.
- Did Upper engine cleaner myself.
- Bought plugs from USA for $87 delivered. Cheapest I could get locally was $32 per plug! Huge saving.
- Got Synthetic gearbox oil from autobarn for 20% off.

Took it to decent local mechanic and got them to do plugs, gearbox & diff oils, coolant and brake & clutch fluid. Also got them to do a complete check over it. Nothing else wrong. They even stamped the book!

If your prepared to do a bit of work and research yourself you can save heaps. Subaru quoted about $1200 and after experiencing Doncaster Subaru's hopelessness with my 99 GT Forester during a warranty job, I will never let my cars go inside a subaru delaer again.

Fuel economy has dropped from 15l/100 kms to about 13.5l/100 kms, prob due to the air filter change.
Thanks a lot bizman. Very helpful stuff! Yeah, I was told $32 a spark plug too so $87 is brilliant! You got them off ebay right? These?

I was thinking of doing the oil change and stuff like that myself but I just didn't know if they would stamp the service book or not. Good to know that they still will. Thanks again for your help.

True, very true. You are not alone in thinking that. It is a good thing it was mentioned here. Definitely can take a lot of load off the wallet. Thanks.

It's a big job to "check " the timing gear on an EZ30, so unless there's specific problems in that area they wouldn't bother.

From the owners manual...

7) Periodic inspection and replacement of the camshaft drive chains on the 3.0-liter models are not required.

Take this to read that these items are intended to last the life of the vehicle

In reference to timing chains on 3.0's
When they sound like a sigma engine they need replacing.

you WILL hear an old, stretched/ worn timing chain.
if your car's approaching 200,000km than inspecting it wouldn't be a bad option.
you'll probably have a water-pump replacement on your hands around this time aswell

I know this is an older thread. But i just thought id mention that they are doing my 100,000km service at 110,000ks. They have quoted me $650 to do all the oils, check all belts, replace air filter, oil filter etc. Do all spark plugs. Check everything (all electrics etc). So i was pretty happy with that. Its a genuine Subaru dealer also.

Hey guys,

I've just (this-morning) taken my Liberty to Ultratune for 100k service. Quoted $1200 however the guy has rung back and said that brakes both front and rear need to be replaced, so now it's up to $1970.

I haven't had the car that long and it's my first Subaru, just wondering if this seems appropriate? There were no obvious signs that they were wearing down so I'm a little concerned.

Any info would be appreciated.

Cheers

Just thought I would mention that my girlfriend drives it daily and there's nothing smooth about her driving. Still, has anyone else needed brakes at 100k?

Where are you based mate? If you are in Victoria, it looks like a few of the guys got it done for cheaper.
