Engine knocking nois?

Heyya guys, tonight i noticed a knocking noise in my 1999 liberty RX's engine..
I can hear it when idling but doesnt seem to get louder when the RPM's go up.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice as to what i should do.

does it change in time with an increase in revs?
i.e knocks faster as opposed to louder?

Auto or manual?
is it a tinny, metallic sounding noise or more of a low, dull thud?
or does it sound more like a fast ticking noise, say like a relay clicking really fast

I had a whistling sound that was giving me the shits for weeks, a few days ago, i drained my trans fluid & engine oil and changed both filters and that done the trick.
Before racking ur brain, try this

Sorry for the late reply, its an auto.. Just drained and replaced both transmission and engine oils and filters filled back up to the right levels.
Its more of a moderate-fast ticking noise, sounds like its coming from the right side of the engine..
I cant hear it when revs are up..

So just to confirm, it doesn't go away when the engine warms up?

No, it doesnt. SOmetimes it gets quieter.. But its still there.

noisy lifter of some description i reckon

try using some high detergent engine oil (Magnatec Diesel) and also run an engine oil flush through it

also grab a long screw-driver and use as a stethescope on various parts of the engine to try and pin-point the noise.
it may just be a loud fuel injector too.

also look for any signs of a leak in the exhaust around that point
and also look at the intake manifold gasket for possible leaks (spray some carbie cleaner around the manifold where it joins the head, if the revs change, then it's sucking in air through a dodgy gasket)
