04-06 Steering Wheel Controls

Postby Tublade » Wed Dec 01, 2010 8:50 am

Just wondering if it is possible to change the steering wheel for the 05 GT manual with the 04-06 GT Auto steering wheel and will the controls on the wheel work fine with the stock head unit?

Had done a search but couldn't find any information.

As in, put audio controls on an auto (removing the gear changing buttons)? I think it should be fine, not sure whether you need a replacement harness or not.

Was thinking of sourcing the steering wheel from the auto and installing it in a manual 05 GT

my old 2005 GT auto didn't have the audio controls, it only had the transmission controls. I think they changed with the facelifted models.
Car(s): Steel Silver MY10 GT Wagon + 1985 Subaru Sherpa

Mods: (GT) HKS Panel Filter. The HKS I put in the MY10 is the same filter I took out of my MY05 GT. So yes, they do fit. Custom leather heel pad to minimise carpet wear in the drivers footwell. Slotted front rotors. (Sherpa) 14'' 6 Spoke mags, Chrome Gear Shift (sick!), Alloy Pedals (sicker!), new positive and negative battery terminals, Alpine cda-9827 H/U, JBL GT 6x9's boxed and mounted (sickest!), Kicker DS650.2 component speakers mounted in the footwells in flibreglass pods, Alpine MRP-F200 4 channel amp (4x40wRMS), Rebadged with hektik chrome eBay badges, STi stickers for more powaaaa, "leather" handbrake boot, recarpetted with grey/black car carpet from Bunnings, sick Clarke Rubber boot mat, polished and waxed.

To my knowledge, only the 3RB had the audio controls on the steering wheel in the pre-face lifted models.

Most of the auto wheels i have seen have these buttons, not sure what they are but manuals didn't get any of them.

The auto had + - on the steering wheel to change gears. No audio controls.

As mentioned by Matt/swingn, only the manual 3.0R-B had the audio controls on the steering wheel.

Has anyone tried to swap their steering wheel from the 3.0R-B and had much success?

^^^

Has been spoken about a bit, & from my understanding there shouldn't be a reason why it can't be done... But I'm fairly sure no one has taken that next step :(

If you plan on doing it, make sure that you obtain the steering wheel from the correct model, as the steering wheels from the MY07-MY09 models do not fit (For what I've heard at least :P )

yeah I'll be trying to get one from a pre-face lift model, if I'm able to obtain one, I'll make sure to do a full writeup with pics.

Make sure you put in more effort with your writeup than I did with my rear wiper conversion write-up :P

Check out the clock springs. See if it supports the extra buttons

pretty sure you can buy the buttons from subaru? i know someone has done it on here before there is a write up but they only work with certain headunits ect so make sure you look into it before you do it.
