Fuel Light Vs Distance Till Empty

Postby jimonabike » Mon Nov 22, 2010 9:54 am

Does anyone know how accurate the Distance Until Empty display is on gen4's?
it sais i still have 150km till empty after my fuel light comes on, which seems a bit excessive to me.

Crunching the numbers it should be right as id average 8.0l/100 for that tank, meaning i should have got 800km, (64L/(8.0L/100Km ))x 100 = 800km for the tank and i had done about 650.
I erred on the side of caution and filled up, but it would be interesting to hear if it is usual for the fuel light to come on so early.

My fuel light used to come on around the 100km left mark. I never brought let it get below 30kms left cause I could feel the car driving differently.

I wouldn't be surprised if, just to be on the safe side, it's a little inaccurate, but I wouldn't want to take the chance.

Mine is pretty conservative. I've run 20 or 30km with the meter on 0km left. Based on it having a 64 litre tank (and all 64l of that available to be burnt) and the fact that the couple of times I have filled it at 0km left the tank took 58-59litres I usually go on the reckoning that I have 30-50km travelling available depending on driving style. As Leo has outlined though, others' mileage does vary so your will likely be different

I think the "distance until empty" figure is calculated dependant on how heavy one's foot is, and not actually dependant on how much drops are left in the tank. :?

Yep - the car uses the rate of fuel consumption to calculate distance remaining... not sure how long it averages over though...

Being the new owner of a 2007 TB, I also querying a) the actual gauge b) k's left..

At the moment I am getting very similar economy to my 350z but in a smaller tank... based on that I will be filling up every 5 days.. which gives me the heebey jeebeees. At the moment, I am on the last major notch, and it believes I have 110km left... Its going to be interesting to see what happens.

In my MY06 (your facelifted instrument cluster may well be different) when the fuel gauge needle sits at the first notch into the arc of the gauge (between the bottom two segments in the arc) the tank takes between 48 and 50 litres to fill depending on the angle the car is sitting at. It is apparently a 64l tank (I've chickened out at 60 litres a couple of times, never gone any further) so you still have a bit left

I have one, but the numbers do not add up.. whats missing is how many L's left in the tank. Then it would be perfect. :D

My light can come on anywhere from 80- 110Km to tank. After 60, i dont get a reading, i get the dashed lines---.

Really depends on your driving style guys... Traditionally when the empty light comes on you should have enough petrol remaining to travel approx 80-100kms.

BUT, I wouldn't place all your trust in the DTE light, nor would I place all your trust in the adverage consumtion display... They are very good as a guide, but as I've experienced with the EVO (Yes, yes... Flame suit is already on :P ) which has multiple levels of empty warnings. It can be flashing & telling me to fill up ASAP, but there will still be approx 7L left in the tank... I believe most newer models cars are set up this way to prevent any possible impurities that may be sitting in the bottom of your fuel tank getting sucked up.

Personally, I wouldn't suggest running your tank too low... Once the empty light comes on, I'd be filling up at the first available opportunity.
