Shift Kit in 5EAT?

Postby GTurbo » Tue Nov 09, 2010 3:37 pm

Has anybody put a shift kit in the 5eat auto transmission of a GT Liberty? If so what difference did it make and who did it? Thanks.

There's a mob in USA who make a modified valve body for it. Read up about it on www.legacygt.com .

Thanks Tangcla, I have read the American forums quite extensively and have visited a number of American web sites of companies who to all sorts of thing to Subaru Auto transmissions

I was just wandering if anyone has any specific info about Australian companies that may do 5eat shift kits.

There's a place in SA that did/does the modified valve bodies for the the Forester Auto's. One of my old friends had his done there. I'll try and track down where it was and post up the details. My mate is living in Fiji at the moment so has to be done via email etc.

That'd be good.

My issue with going thru IPT in USA is 1) shipping will be expensive, 2) the increased risk of damage to a very fragile part in transit, and 3) we don't even know if the gearbox (or valve body for that matter) is identical between USDM and AUDM.

Only thing you need to do to the auto (Besides a nice sized cooler) is to get an upgraded torque converter... Unless you planning on running 250kw + ATW's, which is no easy task on the auto.

Wouldn't be buying a torque converter locally, as most places here in Aus custom make them. So unless they are willing to back you up 100% should anything go wrong, I'd be getting a unit out of Japan.

But the point of the valve body mod is different to a torque converter - the valve body adjusts the line pressure to give more clamping on the gear changes, giving you a much faster shift. We all know the auto box is pretty slushy when it comes time to change gears - wait a second or two between pressing the button and action.

You'd be changing the clutches inside the gearbox, or adding additional clutch plates.

I was only thinking of about 200kw ATW's, which would include a bigger turbo and supporting mods. From what your saying the 5EAT would be able to cope with only an AT oil cooler...?

Correct!

I was running around that power in my wagon & all I had was a Zero Sports gear box cooler & she never had any issue. Yes, in 3rd gear around 150km/h you could hear a bit of slip in the torque converter, but it didn't cuase any issues at all.

Gear shifts were still as quick as you would expect from an auto.

But that's the thing - the valve body mod makes the gear shifting quick and snappy, not slushy.

Valve body mod and torque converter mod are for two different applications.
