3.0R-B Exhaust

Postby robbo » Sun Oct 24, 2010 8:31 pm

Looking to upgrade my stock exhaust system or mufflers on my '04 3.0R-B, to give it a bit more sound.
What is everyones thoughts?

Has anyone used something like this?

Kinda looks like amazing value. I always wonder whether an exhaust on a 3.0 would just make it super-droney though. I think there's a few that aim for Porsche and get VR Commodore.

Ive also read somewhere on here, http://forum.liberty.asn.au/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=9561 that increasing the size of the exhaust actually loses you power. Might be better off with a pair of sti style quads, im sure Phat GT could hook up something to give you a bit more noise when your pushing it, but still keep it quiet when your cruising.

There are a few aftermarket exhausts on 3.0's here, but seems either cat back or just rear mufflers are the way to go for a nicer sound without droning.

Yeah I thought that could be the case. Definately dont wont a droning commondore sound!!
Just thought it could be a decent option without braking the bank.
Being relatively new to the club. Where/how much, can I get a set of twin phat mufflers for?
(Or somewhere in melbourne which could do a similar set)

Would it be worth looking at a straight through option?

Mine is standard at the moment, as i have a big service due in 1000 km and will need new suspension bushes in the front at the same time, which will take a fair chunk out of my spending balance :( but its def on my wants list, along with a lot of other things 8)

I did find a thread yesterday that had dozens of forum members videos of their cars with their exhaust setups and what they sounded like, ill try and track that down for you.
I think from looking at that ill prob go a rear muffler exchange and leave the rest as it is. Partly for cash pruposes, and partly because ive done that before and it gave me exactly what i was after. I changed the rear muffler on my 2.5 gen 3 and i got a nice growl when i was pushing it, but it was quiet all the rest of the time, and had the same noise on the highway, which is exactly what im after. I also love the look of the quad tips, so i think ill prob go a set of phat quads, but not for a few months yet.
Ill track down that thread for you.
Also, im not sure why this is, but the turbo on a car will reduce the amount of exhaust noise. (dont ask me why) so a turbo system that may sound good on a turbo will be a lot louder on a non turbo, so that system in the original post will prob be quite loud.

Found it. Top of the list in the exhaust section. :)

viewtopic.php?f=55&t=2382

There are a bunch of videos, for turbo, 3.0 and 2.5 in there. most if not all of them are forum members cars, so it gives you a real idea. if you like a particular sound, PM them and ask how they find it etc, everyone here is friendly, so im sure they wouldnt mind answering a few questions specific to their car. :)

Ah ok, well back to the drawing board for me. I have seen some generic branded high flow mufflers with nice tips producing some good sound.
So maybe thats the way to go. haha, thanks for the heads up. :)

did you end up getting anything else?

Don't want to be even a worse bringer of bad news, but I had my Phat Quads for sale about 3weeks on these forums - gone in less than 2hrs of listing !

I'll update it as soon as I hear anything new, but if you can hold out then it's a good chance you will be able to get some.
Also helps if people post in the thread saying they will buy some if PHAT makes them, to give more motivation for him to do so!

one way to get a bit more noise is go to your local exhaust place and get them to make you some smaller mufflers.... altho a word of warning, once you go down this road you will eventually think... hey, this isnt loud anymore i want it to be louder... in which case you will remove the resonator...... then that wont be enough and youll take the mufflers off. then you sound like an F1 car haha.

But i think smaller mufflers (Phat Quads have an excellent reputation, as do sti cans), is the best option.
