3.0R-B oil usage

Postby SamD » Sun Oct 24, 2010 8:20 pm

Hi guys,

Just picked up a Liberty 2006 MY07 3.0R-B 6M with 47k on the clock. Car is in great condition. Had missed 3.5year service but was due for 4 year service, last service has been 12 months ago with 10k on clock since then.

Anyway after having car for few days checked oil level and it was extremely low. Needed almost 3L to top it up. I know oil capacity is around 5.5L so it had burned a bit of oil. Feeling very silly for not having checked this BEFORE purchasing but it's all done and dusted now. I assume if the owned had realized the oil was this low he would have topped it up before trying to sell. Took the car down for full service at Subaru at they said everything checked out just fine which is a great relief.

So i understand that "acceptable" oil usage is 1L/2000km (manual transmission using more), and assuming that the oil was topped up 10k ago then 3L oil usage is "acceptable".

Going to keep a close eye on oil levels and engine but is there anything particular I should be watching out for?? I assume any damage what would have been done from low oil level would have occurred??

I'd be checking the oil VERY regularly (weekly) if it's been run with that low oil for some time then there would have been a hell of a lot of wear.

i made a habit to check oil when i wash it.

I buy 2 bottles of oil and after the initial top up (takes more than 5.5 to bring it to the top of the level) i use the rest of the 2nd bottle to top it up between services.(10-12k intervals)
