P Plate Legal Mods (NSW)

Postby -Enflix » Wed Oct 13, 2010 11:19 pm

Hi all, just a few quick questions regarding mods to my Liberty.
Problem is, of course, that I have my red P's (NSW), and the laws are weirdly fuzzy when it comes to mods, and what can be defined as a mod..

After trawling through the RTA, as well as other forums and such, I've come across heaps of different opinions/rumors/etc when it comes to modding.
For instance.
I installed a pod filter today. Nothing special, not excessively loud (infact, you can barely hear it until its >3k rpm) etc.
Different sources say different things.
The RTA states that engine modifications are illegal, however, only if they enhance the output by >15%. Does this include pods? is that 15% per mod, or all up?
Are pods illegal in all forms, for a p plater?
Legal if covered?

Really, im just confused. The pod's staying off untill I know otherwise.
any clarification would be fantastic, as well as any suggestions for legal mods, (or those not-so-legal ones, which are impossible to detect ;))

Luke.

pretty sure any modification that isnt engineered is illegal... i've read in a few places that even factory cars can sometimes roll off the line with several defect-able items stock.

uncovered pod filter is illegal (though i have read this varies paper filter vs oil)

If you want to play it safe and be totally ok with the law... dont play around modding your car until you are off your p's. If you're happy to take a slight risk of getting caught and having to revert it back to stock then modify tastefully (ie covered pod filter, some different rims, interior mods)

If you dont have any concerns about getting caught then go bananas (exhaust, lairy rims etc). At the end of the day though the your P plate is like a red (or green) bullseye on the back of your car for the cops and you dont really want to draw any more attention to yourself than is there already.

Mate, this is one of the things you need to be looking at if you want to stay within the rules - Guidelines for Light Vehicle Modifications. This one is also good - Guidelines for alternative wheels and tyres

If you want to view all the guidelines, go here: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/ ... ml?rlid=17

To view all the vehicle standards, go here: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/ ... ml?rlid=16

If you are still confused about what you can and can't do after reading all that, and you want to stay within the rules....I suggest you keep it standard. Insurance companies won't bend you over as much then either. :assassin:
Speed has never killed anyone. Suddenly becoming stationary… that’s what gets you.

Thanks guys, appreciate the help. Had a look through those guidelines again.
I think I'll leave it pretty much alone, then. I'll try and find a cover for the filter, but yeah im not holding out.
I've got some nice 17" MY07 mags on it, and I might play around with the interior a bit, but I think I'll try to steer away from performance.
That is, untill I get fed up and replace all the things that police cant see :)
