it is very effective, as it stops water ingress, and potential hydrolocking when doing water crossings... that this car also has the grille blocked would suggest that this is one of the uses for the "snorkel" that has been added to it. also if you're doing a lot of work in dusty conditions, the pre-filter this one has fit would be invaluable...
Had a day up in Wombat State Park in my MY04 XT a couple of years back, and had to throw out the filter afterwards, as it was solid with compressed dust.
I guess it's one of those "don't knock it until you try it" things...
If I was still taking our Forester off-road, it would absolutely have a snorkel fitted to it, for river crossings and dust, as well as the electronics being sealed against water ingress.
Safari don't make one specifically for any Subaru, however the one for the Rodeo can be modified slightly to look like it's meant to be there...
