Are you talking about the resonator for the Air filter? I did mine on the weekend and Phat said just leave it open. Much better sound from the engine. Probs nothing more out the exhaust though

Ah ok, did he say whether it is bad for your engine to remove it? From what I can tell, all a resonator is there for is to reduce noise? So removing it shouldnt really do anything...

Im thinking I might take the libs to an exhaust shop and see if they can offer anything that will increase noise, not too loud, and allow me to keep my quaddies

Personally I didn't notice the difference between having the resonator hole covered or uncovered, sounded exactly the same to me.

Said it just reduces the induction noise. But sounds good on a GT. Probably sounds alright on a NA. 2 minute job, if you don't like. 2min to put back on.

this is exactly why i stopped using my pod filter and went back to stock set up with a panel filter.

Jim I'm lost can you explain what you mean by no good. No good as in it's bad for my car, or no good as in it won't do anything. I tried googling that guy but am having trouble connecting the dots between his studies and my 2.5i na liberty. Drndrn have u removed the resonator and found it made no difference?

Might be diff on the Libs, but wouldn't leaving the hole unblocked mean that your car will suck in hot engine air, this would even worse on a GT I would imagine.

Yes Tai, that is the case.

Alex, the resonator in the exhaust can be removed. It won't hurt your engine (or your engine's performance - it's a straight through design in the first place) but you will likely introduce a level of drone in the exhaust note at certain speeds. It will also be a fair bit louder. How loud I don't know but it will be. Some people have replaced the OEM resonator with one or two "hotdog" resonators - smaller items which by their size and design are not capable of reducing noise to the level the stocker does.

Re: the comment about the washers in an exhaust flange and your question as to whether it would hurt your engine. No, it won't hurt it but it would be evident to anyone outside the car that you have something wrong with your exhaust IMO. If you have car stands though it is a pretty easy thing to give a try. You'd need a couple of washers with an internal diameter of at least 8mm (to fit over the bolt in the flanged joint) and external diameter in the area of 15-20mm. They wouldn't need to be particularly thick.

I removed it and had a pod filter for a while, I relaly noticed no difference except for the sound and having the 'bling' when opening the bonnet. That said, I did like the sound for a while lol.

But after more research, I came across that hemholtz stuff, and from what I can gather on the NA subarus that have AFM's, the sound and resonance created by removing the intake resonator will cause your AFM to misread the airflow which then affects how your car runs. (Jim please correct me if i'm wrong).

But the guys in the US did some research and found that the best set up for the NA subarus were to put a panel filter, and change the piping AFTER the AFM to a more straight through pipe. I've currently got the stock airbox with resonator on with a custom PHAT made intake chamber+pipe from the airbox onwards to the throttlebody.

What muffler/tips do you have on your car?? Do you have any sound clips (so I can see if its the kinda sound im after )?

I got STi quads as well. i think I'm the only one on the forums that like the sound of them! haha. I sold my PHAT quads for the STi's.

Lol, I like the STIs, I just want them a bit louder. When im under the car port it echos and they sound really nice, and when i take off in 1st they sound ok, but just a bit louder would be nice. Dont wanna spend a whole heap tho

Yeah, I think they're subtle, but just loud enough to be noticed if you boot it.

Im sure if you wait around long enough you'll find something that suits you. Ie. phat quads. lol

I have a feeling USDM cars are different as I also have seen them refer to a MAF in NA cars. Mine runs a MAP sensor, not a MAF. I suspect yours is the same.
