I've got a 500D, just with the 55-250mm and 18-55mm lens kit. Only basic package, but I always like to see the best shot I can get unedited. Obviously that's what you're trying to do anyway, but I want people to go "that's an awesome shot mate" but still keep it raw.

My challenge :)

What is HDR photography? I'm very new to editing, nearly all of my photos I show people are raw.

Played with it but I personally don't like doing too much post-processing in my photos.

And plus - if I can get this in a single exposure, why do I need to use HDR? :)

Ahh I was wondering why it looks so well lit, like a fashion shoot or something
Need to get into some light painting in pitch blackness with those coloured torches, that would look awesome.

With Audrey doing a massage job for a few hours at Brookvale Oval on Sunday I had some time to kill. Ended up down at DeeWhy Beach with the 40D

Tried some narrow aperture, low ISO longish exposure (for waves) shots in the shade

And the last shot I got in before a rogue wave splashed the camera and lens. (I was parked a good 3m above the level of those rocks, thought I was safe from waves as nothing had come anywhere near the ledge I parked myself on)

Nice. What lens where you using?

I just ordered a Marumi polariser for my camera. Can't wait to try it out.

Thanks. The lens was a Sigma 18-50 f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM. Sadly, the poor bugger got some salt water in amongst the switches and focus and zoom rings when it got splashed. Only cost me something like $200 2nd hand so will use it until it fails then retire it rather than spend similar to repair it.

Cool. I've heard of a challenge that my brother and two of his mates did. They went into the city for a night, each with a camera, no tripod and just a straight 50mm lens. The competition was to see who could get the "best" photograph for the night. Looked like it was alot of fun. A straight 50mm lens is cheap too. A canon one, f1.8 (I think) is around $100-150.

Yeah, the 50 f/1.8 is a good lens for the money. Mine has behaved well when I've used it. The f/1.4 versions from Canon and Sigma at around $600 bring some nicer blur in the out of focus areas than the cheap one and have better focus drives. Some compare the Sigma with the Canon 50 f/1.2 L (at 3 times the price). Still the f/1.8 version can be just about as sharp as these when stopped down a bit if what I have read and seen is any indication

Then there are a huge bunch of 50mm lenses which when mounted on a Canon (with appropriate adapator) are manual focus - some of those are spectacular.

The challenge sounds like a good deal of fun. Should try something like that someday

... and some even nicer lenses, if you're willing to lose out on AF and get a mounting bracket. Some of the older exotic 50mm primes are beautiful!
