04 GT Liberty Misfire.

Postby Lick the Knife » Tue Aug 10, 2010 6:00 pm

Hi all,

have had my 04 manual GT wagon for 18 months. When I bought it I felt it may have had a intermittent misfire under load and at idle, after a while it became more apparent (to the point where nothing would come out of exhausts for a second when idleing), Subaru dealer could find no faults with diagnostic equipment, cut a long story short ended up getting injectors removed and cleaned, this fixed problem. Good news :D .

Bad news :x , it's back :!: 12 months later. Again Subaru dealer diagnostic gear shows no faults, before you ask, run BP Ultimate 98 octane, 99% of the time, Subaru injector clean and top of head cylinder clean used at services. Now looking at getting a complete fuel system clean, which includes on car injector clean.

What do you think :?:

Any body else heard of problem like this :?:

There are upgraded/different injectors available from Subaru that could fix this for you. I got mine replaced under warranty, I'll see if I can dig out the part number for you.

Currently experiencing the same problem same year model and everything. annoying the absolute shit out of me. changed plugs and run injector clean. still no good. So maybe have to get injectors cleaned. how much roughly do they charge for that? thanks heaps

I have had the same problem too guys, your not the only ones!

I have heard that it is a common problem with the injectors on our cars.

I guess flushing them is only a short term fix...

This sounds like the only real fix for that problem, a bit more pricey then an injector flush though :(

Cheers guys

No mate, I got mine thru warranty and there was no price on the invoice. Give them a call and let us know when you find out. I don't imagine they would be cheap but you never know.

Are they top feed or side feed?

If top feed, I have two sets of of MY08 GT injectors that I'll sell for cheap.

Will even include updating your rom with new injector scaler, latencies and tip in.

Good to know I am not on my own here. :)

Have had what the mechanic called a fuel system clean, all done on car, includes throttle body and injectors. Seems to be OK now, certainly sharpened up throttle response 8) , if misfire and rough idle is still there it is not obvious as it was.

From past experience it came back  after Subaru injector clean and Top of Head cylinder cleaner had been used so will see how it goes. Will be travelling few hundred k's this weekend and racing at Hill Climb  , so will have a good idea of it is fixed by next week :| .

I had a 175,000 km logbook service and the fuel system clean done for $410. so I guess fuel system clean cost about $200. :?

Replacment injectors sound interesting, will check it out with new local dealer, he has a experienced mechanic from another Subaru dealership, that I spoke to last week, but he just reset the idle, didn't seem to achieve anything :( .

Well wouldn't you know it the misfire is back, has gradualy crept back after about 200kms driving. Of course it is still intermittent but gradualy getting more prevalant again, will have to look into injectors :x . More money :angry2: .

My research with Subaru, seems to imply they only have one injector part number listed, no upgrade to standard injectors, which cost over $1,200. :x So it looks like aftermarket is the only option, what a pain. Maybe I will update car instead :?:

Well my GT has just spent a heap of time with new local dealer (who has experienced Subaru Mechanic from dealer that closed), he was confident could find problem :) , I even swapped air flow meters with a friends GT, all to no avail :? .

Next step is Independent Motor Sport  , they have a four wheel drive dyno 8) , hopefully that will help sort it out :| .
