Introduction

Where to begin? Well, I bought my pride and joy in March in excellent condition and with only 39,500km on the clock. My previous car, 1989 Honda Prelude, was on her last breath and I figured I should start planning to upgrade before I'm left with no car. The Honda died 2 days before I picked up my Subaru. The other cars I was thinking of getting were an EVO VIII or Mazda 6 MPS. Both those cars had their pro's and cons but none could trump the overall package the Lib GT had. In addition, the GT which I eventually bought was too good an offer to pass at the price they were offering and the condition it was in. It wasn't until I test drove it that it completely sold me. The ride was smooth, the power distribution was nice and linear, the handling was great and interior was superb. Needless to say, a few days later, I had finally bought my dream car.

Another thing that really appealed to me about the Subaru was their reliability history, the fact that Subaru owners are the most loyal of them all (I can see why!), and the modification potential for the car.

Stock Pictures

So these are pictures of my Liberty the day I bought it.

I was unfortunate enough to have picked up my car on the day of the massive hail storm that hit Melbourne a few months back. About 3 hours after I picked it up, I went to Glen Waverley to do a few things. Next thing I know, I hear this loud thumping on the roof, ran to the outdoor parking area and looked in shock/horror as the massive hail stones began falling and hitting cars. At that point, I knew my car was going to be hit hard. Once it was all over, I got home, wiped the car down with my chamois and went into shock when I saw the extent of the damage. The bonet had over 30 dints, the roof had over 20, the left side had over 15 and the boot had 2 or so. The entire right hand side managed to survive. Luckily, I had the car insured with Justcar about 4 days before buying it so I was covered. I got quotes from 3 places and eventually had the car assessed. The assessor had told me that the car isn't a write off however, once he got all 3 quotes from the panel beaters, all 3 of them came in at over $15,000 and effectively wrote off the car. As you can imagine, it was hard news to swallow especially after searching so long for a perfect Liberty and finally owning my dream car. The assessor then recommended I go to a repairer who was one of the only workshops giving out reasonable quotes for hail damage. Luckily, the quote was reasonable (just under $13,000) and the work was done. My GT looks as good as new, I had a new bonet and boot fitted and you can't fault or notice that the work had been done. She's back to her former glory!

Modifications

When I finally got my car back from the panel beaters, I figured it was time to get to work and get my Liberty looking the way I've always wanted. The shopping spree began.

Image

    - Ultrex Front Lip
    - Ultrex Mesh Grill

I had a Panel beater, who’s a family friend, remove the badge from the original grill and whack it on to the new one. He also fitted the grill, lip and painted the grill.

Image

    - Ultrex boot lip

The same panel beater trimmed the lip to fit perfectly on the boot, primed, sand, sprayed and fitted the boot lip for me. Looks much better than the stock spoiler.

Other pictures;

Other modifications that can’t be seen include;
    - Philips HID 6000k conversion kit (thank tangcla!)
    - Clarion CENET 1251 iPod interface and 120gb iPod classic just for the car.

Next on the agenda...

The stock wheels were nice but the car had so much potential if it had a darker set of wheels with more spokes. Enter, cruisn. Cruisn was/still is selling a set of CS9 wheels. I got to his place to check out the ones he has posted in the ‘For Sale’ forum. My intention was to buy those and get them powder coated gunmetal. That wasn’t necessary. Luckily for me, he had just got a set restored and powder coated in a nice charcoal colour. So I ended up buying these instead,

This leads me to the current state of my ride as at Saturday 7th of August.

I got them fitted on Saturday and had a set of Falken FK452, 225/40/18 fitted at Bob Jane in the morning.

The Future and Beyond

Now that a lot of the cosmetic modifications are out of the way, my focus shifts to performance and handling modifications. I have the following planned

    - Respray brake callipers to a burgundy red. Given I have enough money saved in the not too distant future, upgrade to Brembo’s or something just as good. This is very doubtful though.
    - Cutback exhaust system, possibly even turbo back depending on how much extra power I’ll get from it and the additional cost. I really like the sound of the Fujitsubo systems.
    - Bigger top mount intercooler. Something along the lines of an AVO or Hyperflow top mount IC.
    - Quad exhausts or even some nice cannons. I would love to get more sound out of the car but without being overly noisy.
    - Better airfilter and hosing.
    - Ecutune once all the performance mods are on. Depending on how much money I eventually save, I might just get the car tuned and get a cutback exhaust system.
    - Whiteline front strut bar and rear sway bar.
    - Suspension upgrade. Now this is where I need the expertise of you boys. I would like to get the car lowered slightly (not too much as I really don’t want to scrape the sh*t out of my lip). Coilovers would be ideal but just like the Brembo’s, the cost makes that plan pretty doubtful. Now the Bilsteins for sale in the ‘For Sale’ forum would be great but I’m not sure on whether the car will be sitting lower at all and whether its best I buy those, lowered springs and they have them fitted on the Liberty. Any suggestions? Will the Bilsteins really make that much of an improved difference in the ride without compromising much ride quality? If, so, I’ll put my name down for a set.

Car is looking nice mate :D

I would spray your brakes red (Or at least a similar bright colour)... When behind those dark wheels, they'll really stand out.

In regards to the suspension, the big question is what do you want to do with the car? Track work? Street driving?

If your wanting to hit the track, then coil overs are a must in my opinion... If it's for the street, I'd go for some Bilsteins (For better over all handling performance) & some Tein S Techs or Eibach springs. Both give a nice drop without being super low... Stay away from STI pink springs as everyone I know has eventually replaced them with Teins or something similar.

Looks Great. Dont get caught and put bright fire engine red on the calipers. makes them look crap. Dark red would look good tho. Similar thats on the FPV Brembo's to take of that harsh colour

Definitely needs some sort of lowering.

Love those new wheels, & I agree with having a contrasting colour for the brake. Oh, & I see you got rid of the speed dimples :D

Hey, have a look a Pedders Coilovers - I have them on mine, they are cheap but I find them pretty good, I haven't been in many cars with coils, but I can say that I have defs been in bumpier cars that are equal to if not higher. They are $1400, $2100 inc fitting, and you can do a 10-12 month interest free (you have to pay 1/3 up front). So I payed $700 up front and 1400 interest free, Im paying $130 a month

PS. did you pay $13,000 to get them out?!??!?! or insurance??? If insurance, why were you looking for a cheap quote? dont they just pay whatever their preferred insurance place tells them

Looks great! Glad to see you got over that hurdle. Always great to see a car at it's humble beginnings. Can't wait to see what's next. :D Hmm, did you decide to go full on with the mods post-repair? Most of my major mods came after I had to a repair or two on the car.

Thank you all for the feedback.

swingn
The car will be for street driving only. I might do a track day in the not too distant future but again, very doubtful. If that's the case then I think some Bilsteins may be the best option. How much do Tein S Techs or Eibach springs go for? I might get them all fitted when I get my 50k major service later this year.

hamish
I'll be avoiding bright red for my calipers like the plague. I was playing with photoshop last night and a burgundy type colour looks best. Black, gold and even blue looked alright too. In regards to lowering, I agree. An inch would be great but I have to be cautious with certain driveways, particularly my girlfriends. If the Bilsteins provide a slight drop, that will be good enough in the time being until I get lowered springs.

cruisn
Thanks again for the wheels mate. I can't stop admiring the car! I got the black nuts from some tyre place in Richmond.

champ
Speed dimples weren't giving me the anticipated 30kw in extra powwwaaa. They had to go!

Laps
I read up on your Pedders coilovers. If I had the money for them, I'd go for them as I've heard they're an excellent product. Problem is I really can't afford to get in debt. I'm still paying my car off and I have to start planning for my future without compromising things such as my car. I have to be realistic with expenditure and will most likely opt for something like the Bilsteins instead.

Insurance paid for the repairs. The problem was the the 3 quotes that I originally got were over $15,000 and therefore Justcar viewed the car as a repairable write-off based on those quotes. There was one other quote that I got for $8,000 but the place looked shotty and the assessor said that he wouldn't want to approve the repair for that place as he had several issues with their work in the past. The problem was that after the hailstorm hit, panel beaters were all charging crazy, unreasonable prices for repairs. So he suggested I check out a perstige repairer, Graeme Cuthbert, who gave me a reasonable quote, just under $13,000. Even though the quote was still high, the assessor approved the repair and Justcar took over from there. Was pretty happy with the outcome. You can imagine how devestated I would have been had the car be written off after only 2 weeks of owning it.

Arith
All the mods came after the repairs. There was not point getting started when I wasn't even sure if my insurance was going to write the car off. I'm glad it all worked out though!

Get in contact with Phat GT regarding the Teins mate... :)

Eibachs can go mighty cheap, but generally speaking you'd be looking at around $500ish.

UPDATE

It's been a very long time since I last updated my member profile and my car has certainly gone through several transformations.

I took the Lib to a photo shoot Tangles had about 2 years back with some other members. These are the last pics I had of the Liberty before it went through a few more changes back in 2011. The car only had cosmetic mods at this point and is as it was towards the end of my first post.

2012

2012 was a big year for the Liberty as I had some extra cash to spend on it.

New Mods
Since the first post, I decided to make some new cosmetic modifications and more importantly, some performance mods!

- New Corazon grille. Thanks to Phat for getting this beaut for me. In my opinion, it's the best looking grille for a post facelift GT and the finish was flawless.
- Ultrex eyelids. I've always liked the look of eyelids with the Corazon grill and lip combo. Got these new from Ultrex and the quality was quite good. Given the price I couldn't complain.
- Spec B Billy shocks and Phat S-Tech springs. As per the above side shot of the Liberty, I had the new suspension fitted before the photo shoot. The car now sits nice and aggressively and handles nicely. The only criticism I can give about the set up is that the ride is somewhat harsh at times. But despite that, it's a brilliant set up.
- Summit strut brace - Not shown but I bought this from Ultrex and looks nice sitting in the engine bay. Sorry but no pics :(

Image

Image

Now for some performance goodies!
- TCP quad exhaust
- TCP center pipe
- PHAT dump pipe
- HKS panel filter
- HPF ECU flash. Took it to Marty after positive feedback from his basic tunes. I have to say I was very pleased with the overall difference. The low end is responds great and boost comes in at around 2500rpm. Dyno results from the tune was 156.9kw atw up from 138.7kw. I would have uploaded the chart but can't find it anywhere. Marty explained that the dyno results would have been higher had it been a much cooler day as it was 36 on the day. So when the dyno day at Edge motorworks was organised, I thought it was the perfect time to run it through it's paces.

Image

I was over the moon when I saw it hit over 160kw atw and even more so when it finished above 165kw atw. Exactly where I want it to sit given the power and the tune.

2013 - Present

The car was looking the goods and I promised myself that I was done with mods. But I think we all know that it's not as simple as that...

Image

Image

- OEM Subaru Sports boot lip. After someone posted an ebay link in the great buys thread for a brand new boot lip I figured I'd bid a max of $130 on it thinking that I would most likely not win it. To my surprise I did and moved ASAP to remove the hideous, cheap Ultrex boot lip I had fitted to the car. Looks 100000x better now! You can also see the quads 8)

Image

Image

Image

- JDM Spec B bar, new OEM JDM STI lip and new Corazon grille to match. Ever since Doyab (Jake) posted his bar up for sale, I have been wanting to buy it. Luckily for me, I was able to round up some cash to take it off his hands. I also had to buy a new Corazon grille and JDM STI lip to match the new bar. Kieren (Chaotic) offered to help with fitting the bar at the last Kebab meet and was kind enough to make time last week to help fit it. We ran through some issues, wheel nuts would not budge, panel clips were not coming off, bar was not fitting 100% due to the styrofoam requiring a DIY (thanks to Cruisn for this piece of advice) but Kieren stepped up to the plate and delivered the goods. He did a fantastic job fitting the bar, the STI lip, grille and doing some extra work such as cleaning my panel filter, fitting new LEDS, and could not fault the work. Couldn't have got a better job a work shop TBH. Thanks again mate!
