I knew sooner or later the word “clutch” going to come out from my mouth … it came one night when I was driving home got onto M5 2nd gear full boost …… slip slip … then 5th gear foot down slip slip slip … so next morning phone call to Phat man.

Unlike the 6 speed box plenty of clutches to choose from for the 5 speed not so lucky!! Phat man did some home work and narrow down to one, Jun clutch kit which comes with new flywheel and clutch plate and it was either go for ceramic or organic. Since it’s my daily so I went for organic.

Few days later got a phone call from Phat man asking me if I want to try Single plate HKS LA clutch as it just got released for the 5 speed and got good feedback over at Japan.
"HKS LA CLUTCH" is a mild characteristic single clutch with easy operation during clutch engagement and high torque transfer performance.
The new composite single plate clutch can be used from street driving to sport driving up to 450PS.

Week later ...new clutch is here also got a new clutch bearing ...

Standard clutch and flywheel still in very good condition... no heat spot and the clutch plate looks good too not bad for 7 track days and 65000km but too bad it can't handle the power ...

Ready for the gear box to go back in ~
After everything went back together Shockproof gear oil gone into the box ..

So how does it feels ? at least you can feel the clutch now ... !it rev a lot better with the lightweight flywheel and my idle went down by 100rpm and yes stall the car too :oops: .. need to get use to the new clutch ...ooh ... no more slip!! I will update this as i do more driving.

And last thing HUGE thanks to phat man for getting the clutch and installing it on his precious Sunday !! must say you learned heaps when you look at phat man working on your car !!

Looks great Leo! Good to see your car is keeping up with your powa. I think any more powa and you're gonna need to reinforce the shell & frame to prevent it from buckling.

Good to see more clutches becoming available for our cars, mine was such a headache and that was only a few months ago!

Can I ask how much the complete clutch kit was?

Good stuff Leo! Was drooling over your new clutch on Saturday... God those HKS units are great looking :D

Can't wait to hear more about it, I know there's a few members looking for new clutches at the moment.

Big thumbs up to Phat as well 8) What would we do without him...

Sweet clutch! The stockie looks like you've been driving it pretty sympathetically too :)

This is mores question for Phat but anyone else may also know answers to:

1) Did the spigot bearing get changed as well?

2) I'm curious as to which method Phat used to change the clutch, as I'd likely adopt the same for mine and just want make sure I get all the parts required:

a) Did you pop front driveshafts out of transmission, or pop them out at the hub end? If the first option were new driveshaft seals needed? In either case my understanding is that the propshaft must come out to drop the trans down and back; is there much fluid loss or was it totally changed in this case just because?

b) Did you remove headers and/or remove center exhaust section? if removing headers would you recommend new gaskets?

Yes new bearing went in
Yup front drive shaft is out from transmission but we didn't replace the seal and we drained the fluid and replaced with new fluid at the end.
Had to remove the DP and center pipe (or the whole exhaust) and i would say it's good idea to change the gasket .... but i didn;t as i don't have one ~

Any detail stuff im sure Phat man will answer it ..

Thanks Leo, in the pic it shows a release bearing. This is different from the spigot bearing. Or did you replace the Spigot too but just didn't take a photo of it? :)

Mr HKS sent the spigot bearing ... :wink:

Im sure i took photo of that too ...haha.. but it's at home ..

Hi Leo,

Great news that you have the new clutch - they are a bit easier to stall at first but my car is now my fiances daily drive and she copes with her 3 inch heels (though she has started to take them off for the drive thankfully). The really progressive but decisive bite of an organic clutch allows you to bring up the revs a bit more than with the old dmf. Have you noticed any clutch/gear rattle at low engine speeds (not when the clutch is engaging, but when going around carparks etc at low speeds- window open). Mine is just perceptable and was annoying for a bit - no rattle seems right - but I have gotten used to it now or it has gone away.

Since i had the clutch i drove few other liberty with std clutch ... must say my clutch got lot more feel ...over the std .. and yes i have noticed my clutch do have very slight rattle noise when im not on the gas ... i can only hear it when i'm in a tunnel or in between concrete barrier ... but overall top clutch .... very happy with them ~
