Head/Fog Light Setup - Whats Yours???

Postby Laps » Fri May 28, 2010 8:45 am

Hey all,

I think I'm about ready to upgrade my lights to HID etc., but need some assistance with picking/choosing..

I'm having a bit of trouble.

I own a 08 2.5i, and from what I understand I would use H7 for the low beams, unsure of brightiness (around 8000k)? I think I want to keep the high beam stock, but I do want to change the parkers/fog lights, but am not sure if its worth putting HID in, or if this can be achieved another more cost effective way?

I basically want the same colour as the audis or whatever...

I've tried searching, there are a few one off posts, but I was wondering if I could get people to post their setup in this format:

Car: (eg. 2008 Liberty 2.5i)
Low Beam: (eg. H7 8000k)
High Beam: (eg. stock)
Fog Lights: (eg. LED or whatever)
Parkers: (eg. stock)

Thanks for your help!

Nice, what was your reason for choosing Phillips Ultra Vision vs HIDs? Also, those PIAAs, what colour do you have (####K)?

Genuine Philips retail kits are what I use, and what I sell ($225 a set delivered). 6000K.

8000K is not the brightness, it's the colour temperature. 8000K is very very blue and I would say it's not actually much help for giving useable light, it's purely cosmetic.

If you want a deep blue colour then HIDs are the way to go unless you get blue tinted halogens which reduce the brightness dramatically.

Bear in mind if you fit a HID retrofit without changing the projector assembly, that the light will come out patchy and unfocused, i.e. you will never get the proper (Audi) HID performance which is a solid, evenly lit beam of light which is nice and wide. You'll just mimic the colour.

The pre-face lifted Gen 4's have projector fog lights... Soooo with thanks to Mr "HID" Leo, he set me up with HID headlamps & fog lights. Both using 6000K globes.

Looks fantastic & provides a great amount of light for night driving... Although 6000K can be a little annoying in the rain (Didn't personally notice much of a difference).

Ok so it sounds like 6000K is tho go for low beam...
I think Ill leave high beam untouched or just get Phillip Ultra vision (will this clash with 6000k)?
Still undecided about fog lights, do you guys reckon HID or LED? I dont really want to spend the money on an extra HID kit if its only going to give the same performance/colour as an LED?
LEDs for parkers...

Tek, Im not after the audi performance, just the colour. In saying that, I wouldnt want the performance to be less than what my stock headlights are? Surely HIDs will still be equal to if not better than stock???

The brightness of the beam will be brighter in some areas compared to stock, but also darker in some areas as well, hence my mentioning that the beam will be unfocused.

I'm using Osram 65W H7 bulbs which retain the factory beam focus but increases the brightness markedly (2100 lumens compared to 1600 lumens stock). Most HIDs start at around 2800 lumens and go up to 3500 lumens depending on the colour temp you select and how good the globes and ballast are.

I'm using 5000k (pure white) for low beam, 3000k (yellow) for fog and 3000k for high beam.

Low beam .. HID .. yes !!
Fog light ... HID ... yes !! (if you got the spare $$) if not upgrade to better halogen bulb. LED is only good if you want to match the colour of the Low beam (HID) all the LED fog light currently i can see on the market are pretty average .. specially when it comes to brightness..
High beam .. HID .. NO !! (unless you use them in country road A LOT and you leave them on for long period of time) ... if not upgrade to better halogen bulb

Low beam - 4300k HID (Leo brand lol)
Highbeam - " " Same as above " "
Fog - Standard atm because i havnt been bothered to install the 4300k HID kit i have for them
Parkers - Urrrm...removed  Couldnt get the correct colour to suit the 4300s so i ripped em out lol.

I have HIDs in high beam because i live in the sticks and if i use high beam its usually for at least 20 mins straight.

I went for 4300k temp as its very white, but doesnt look too aftermarket. 8)
