4th Gear synchro troubles

i have 300V in mine, the issue isn't when the box is cold, rather when it's warm.

once the box gets warm, shifting from 3rd to 4th is very crunchy.

i honestly need to double clutch else it'll be grinding the gears.

i'm trying to remember to book in some time to get STi to replace the oil as i'm hoping that they will be able to shed some light on this issue...

I'd be interested to hear the diagnosis as to me that sounds like oil that is too thin at temperature

but it's still rated at 75~90 ( from memory)

same viscosity as what they recommend..

Have a chat to them. Tell them what has started happening after they did the oil change, describing in as much detail as possible. Ask their opinion

I hv left my car for them nearly for a week, he still couldnt find out whats going on!! he has checked most of the parts, couldnt find any prob......

btw for the gear oil.

im pretty sure its lightweight for the gearbox and heavy for the rear diff..

Yeah LW for the gearbox and either lightweight or heavyweight for the rear diff is what most people seem to use. If you really choose to use Shockproof remember there is no going back once you do since the additives hang around for a long time and it's very hard to flush them all out if you change your mind.

IMHO no need to change the rear diff fluid unless you have specific problems with backlash etc. Don't fix what's not broken

My understanding with Subaru boxes is not only does the viscosities rating have to be correct, but also the formulation. This is due to the front diff and synchros all being in the same fluid which is far different to a RWD gearbox for example, so you need something that lubricates and protects the gears under pressure but still allows the synchros to grip.

ok, so i got it done today.

i can't tell if there's any difference as it's so cold that the box really isn't heating up on the way home..

but, they are certain that it's because my clutch is quite worn.

also, because i have a short shifter, "when u press on the clutch, it's not releasing as quick as it should and the short shift is changing gears so quickly that the syncros cannot keep up"

i think i would like to speak to someone else at STi tomorrow as i work near there...

my simple mind is just having issues reconciling the information which they gave me.

Oh, the situation that u hv is totally different on me, I hv a new heavy clutch installed but without short shifter!! So in this case that means the clutch too quick and the syncos cannot keep up? hahaha........ hopefully either one of us can find out whats going on!!
May be u can pass me yr short shifter and hv a try, hehe~~ is it go idea?

not exactly easy to swap out the short shift.

it's the little pin in the reverse lock out thing that you need to bash out which causes the most grief...
