i think this might be something to do with the 6MT

i'm having similar issues with my GTB. only from 3rd to 4th.

seems that there have been reported issues with the 6MT box in asia where the syncros are slightly misaligned. something like a 50/50 chance i've been told.

along the lines of "half the boxes got built by trained subaru engineers, and the other half got built by monkeys"...

my clutch is also on it's way out, but i can't see how the clutch would affect the syncros.

i'm tempted to go back to the OEM subaru oil to see if it helps (got 300V in there now).

so has subaru come out and offered the fix this at their cost?

i'm peeved that the issue only became more consistent after my warranty ran out...

and even now, it seems to be only when the box is hot. and we all know how hard it is to get anything warrantied at docklands...

That sounds a lot like it has the wrong oil in it.
If mine is extremely cold, it doesn't want to shift down from 3rd to 2nd, but that goes away after a minute or so, and then all gears are extremely smooth. I've done about 96,000km.

I second that notion. How long has the oil been in there? If it is old it will have depleted its viscosity improvers, and so when the oil gets to operating temp it's viscosity is too low and doesn't lubricate the gears properly, this will also allow the synchros to slip.

Thirding here. Hin mentioned that he had just had the fluids changed recently. I'd suggest he gets it done again with correct (in not heavier than spec) weight fluid as it sounds to me like they put lightweight oil in it. Hell, they could have put engine oil in it :?

^^ Yeah I think as a fairly cheap exercise he could just use Multitrax if he doesn't want to blow $150 on Syntrax. It'll be about $50.00 for a full fill of the 6MT. Multitrax is going to run a hell of a lot better than any other more expensive oil if it is the wrong type.

I hv had my 100,000kms service at Ward While Motors in BoxHill, he is specialising on Subaru and Honda, I saw few WRX and Liberty in his workshop, so I never think abt i may using the wrong oil.
This problem comes out around 4-5000kms after the major sevice, due to the sound is related to the operation temp on my car, I believe I may give it a try on the oil change!! "Specialist can be wrong"??
I may take the redline, $150 is not cheap for the transmission oil, but better than sitting in the car and doing nothing and give up my 4th gear all the way!!
Guys, thx for the information!!

Have a chat to them. Tell them what has started happening after they did the oil change, describing in as much detail as possible. Ask their opinion
