Canberra - Road Conditions?

Hey guys.. some friends and I are heading down to Canberra for the weekend (24th-26th August).. and i remember reading somewhere about some unmarked mobile speed cameras, red light + speed camera combos, sensors in the roads, etc etc..

Now, built up in my head its like some kind of mass "raid" on "speeding".. im not planning on speeding, but you should know, sometimes you dont realise you are doing 10k's over the speed limit or whatever.. or may not know the speed limit, etc etc..

Just wondering what it is really like down there? Based on what i remember reading at some point (cant find the post), its like they are Nazis on speeding! haha..

Don't speed.

If anywhere else than NSW, just don't speed. You shouldn't be speeding anyways :p right? :p

I was in Canberra last month, and the GPS was mapping out that most traffic lights have the integrated redlight + speed camera combinations so i just stuck to the speeds around town in cruise control for awhile.

I think it's more a less in the city you have to be worried about fixed cameras etc.

As for mobile - who knows ...

Anyone who says they keep to the limit 100% is lying. Even if you go over by 5km/h that's still speeding and nobody here can say that.

Hi Tom,

Have lived in Canberra the last 5 years and never got a ticket - the redlight/speed cameras are clearly marked with signs before the intersection so there is no reason to get a ticket there!

The mobile units (I think there are only 2-4 for all of Canberra) are big white vans stuck on the side of the road with a "your speed has been checked" note on the top, and you are able to see them a fair distance off.

I have had more tickets (2) in Victoria in the couple of years (both for doing 65/66 in a 60 zone), and Canberra is nowhere near that bad.

But as others have said, stick around the limit and you'll be fine!

I'm not saying I don't speed on aoccasion, I like to stick the boot in as much as the next bloke. But every time I do, I know that I'm running the risk of getting my photo taken by a car on the side of the road, or being pinged by a mobile radar.
I could deal with a fine, but loss of licence would mean loss of job..

So long as people don't make it sound like they never speed and make out like speeding is the be all and end all of motoring accidents. I only say this because most streets these days are 10~20 km/h slower than what it should be that's why traffic usually travels faster than the posted limit anyway. I agree excessive speed (e.g. 100 in a 60 zone) is not necessary amd is dangerous.

you'll be fine, just keep to the limit, especially once you get into Canberra.
There are new speed cameras straight away once you enter NSW -> ACT border on both Barton Highway and Federal Highway entries.
