Models with separate HVAC and Head Unit?

Postby F1Pilot » Mon Apr 12, 2010 9:11 pm

Hey guys,

Been reading for days now on this site and any others I could find in the world, and I am still confused!!

Can somebody please clarify which models of Liberty have a separate Head Unit and HVAC?

That is, which models (excluding the balanced/unbalanced signal facts) can the head unit be removed/replaced without having to buy the expensive fascia from Japan?

I have the MY05 3.0RB, is it possible on this model? (ie Mcintosh)

In all of the forums I have read, they either go off on a tangent, or end up with half the people saying that it is one unit, and half saying it isnt.

I have also seen a picture of one that had only the head unit removed and a custom fascia made for the top half, so it obviously does exsist, I just dont know which models.

Thanks for any help guys,

None, unless you have 2003 and earlier models. 2004 onwards you need to buy the JDM double DIN fascia unless you do some fancy fabrication work.

Hey thanks. So just to confirm then, my Mcintosh head unit and HVAC are ONE unit behind the fascia? Hence I will need to buy the new HVAC electronics with fascia?

If that is a yes, does the fascia ONLY come in double din? I only want to replace the HU with a single. Its a pity that it is one unit, cause I was hoping to make all carbon fibre fascia for the inside. Im sure some people here would have liked that!!

For the McIntosh, the head unit and the faceplate which incorporates the HVAC controls are split into two sections, along with the face plate, which is evident when you look at it because there is a gap.

What I'm saying is that even if you remove the head unit and just leave the HVAC control section in the car you still have no other way of mounting a single or double DIN head unit without fabricating a bracket and face plate.

The JDM fascia only comes in double DIN.

04-06 Mcintosh have a separate HVAC unit. I have a spare HVAC at home, after I bought the double DIN fascia.

Ah righteo. Thanks heaps guys. That has relieved me a little. Im not to concerned about fabrication of bits, but more concerned if I had to pay an extra $400odd just to start with.

I am out of country at the moment, but when Im home (5 weeks) I will do an install probably with carbon an postup some pics.

Cheers.

Dude - look at my car - I have the exact same headunit as you did, and I have changed it.

Pictures speak louder than words. :)

They probably thought you meant without replacement panels.

nah i explained it to him and he tried to tell me that it wont work with the mac installed cos its apparently different......then after i started asking questions about upgrading my sound system to something on the affordable / quality compromise he quoted me $6 worth of bolk audio kit (2 front speakers worth $550), 2 amps, 2 rears .....and get this asked if i liked lots of bass to which i replied i like the bass to fill in with the music not be heard 5km down chapel st....so his recommendation was 2x 12inch for the boot
