Speakers cutting in and out... Amp, or H/U

Postby garbo41610 » Mon Apr 12, 2010 9:11 am

hi all,

yesterday on my way home from mudgee to sydney i noticed at first the front left channel cutting in and out probably every 10 mins or so, then eventually it switched to the front right channel cutting in and out every 10 mins or so, then in changed to the front left and right channels cutting in and out although this only happened once. Note: I was playing CD's not the iPod or radio.

After a stop off in portland (near lithgow) i didn't notice the problems happening anymore.

Just wondering if the smack-n-toss amp could have been going into protection or something however I don't see the amp being as sophisticated as to protect a specific channel. Or could it be a problem with the H/U??? I haven't had a chance to check the din cable is plugged in properly just yet as I had to spend a couple of hours yesterday cleaning the car when I got home to remove the millions of bugs, what appeared to be small birds, and I'm pretty sure there were a couple of roo's stuck in the grill by the looks of some of the splatter marks.

I have noticed an increase in the noise coming from the fan in the amp and have not noticed it before. The only change I have made in the last month or so to the H/U is the iPod adaptor. I would think that if this was going to cause any problems, they would be noticed on the first use, not slowly deteriorate over time.

My car is under warranty from the used car dealership from which I bought it, however they are not a Subaru dealer so they are my last port of call.

Anyone else had any similar problems???

Car is below in my sig.

Hi Phil,

I have a similar problem at the moment with the "replacement" head unit Subaru provided me with. The front right channel comes and goes, but it is in synch with the movement of the car.

I have checked the connections on the back of the head unit and they appear to be seated correctly. Subaru do have another replacement unit on order for me.

If I were you, I would look at taking the head unit out and confirming that all the connections. You could also look under the seat and confirm that all was correct there as well.

I do know that Subaru have an independant mobile radio service guy that comes around and actually fixes the radio onsite. Contact Tom Kerr service if you need more info about him.

it could possibly be a problem with the wiring inside the doors?

my old car, when i put the old speakers back in (prior to selling) they would cut in and out sometimes depending on the movement of the car.

after some google searching, i found out that 1 of the speaker cables was shorting inside the door, therefore losing sound to that speaker.

hmm... I don't think that it would be the cabling as it was happening randomly... however, it is probably my third port of call when i start testing things
