Hi there - and buying tips on an 05-06 3.0R

Postby Hank_MD » Mon Apr 05, 2010 1:53 pm

Hi all,

Joined the forum as I’m hoping to shortly join the Liberty club! I had a little 2006 Impreza that gave me very good service for four years until it was written off following the Melbourne hail storm. The good thing is that I now have the opportunity to upgrade for not a lot of $ to a Liberty!

I’m thinking of an 05-06 3.0R. The main thing I’ll be doing with this car in the short to medium term is clocking up a lot of freeway kms. I’m not toooo concerned about mileage, but I think this model should be OK (?), but I do want a car that is going to be nice and comfortable for sitting in for 2 hours 4 times a week.

1. Have a picked a good model for my needs?
2. Anything in particular I should look out for when buying?
3. Should I post my questions in some other part of the forum?

Thanks all for your time. Looks like a nice forum!
(Though I think I’ll spend more time in the bling forum rather than the true mods forum  )

Good luck with the purchase. For the use you describe pretty much any model Lib will be comfortable for cruising the highways, but the 3.0 or the GT will be the best for any urgent overtaking you might need to do.

There is nothing major to watch out for just make sure its got a service history and has been well looked after. Get a mechanic to check it if ur not sure.

If u r doing lots of miles just try and find one with as low km's as you can as an 05/06 model is a few years old now and can easily have 100k plus on them. Also do some seaching on on this forum about the difference between the 05/06 and 07+ models as there was a facelift in 2007 and it brought some new and updated features which you might prefer if you can afford to go 1 year newer.

Also, if you come across a 3.0 R-B (spec B) that is the pick of them - it has the bilstein struts.

Cheers,
Andrew

Plus I believe the Spec B also had the choice 6 speed manual as opposed to the 5speed on the rest of the 04-06 range. After 07, both the GT and 3.0 went to the six speed man

The 3.0R (non Spec-B) was only available in 5-speed auto. You had to get the 3.0RB to get a manual box, and it was a bonus that it was 6-speed ;)

Hey all,

Thanks for the replies. I needed to go for a 3.0R rather than 3.0R-B for both price and the fact that it will be a city baby-mobile for my wife probably about once a fortnight.

I've ended up with an August 2005 3.0R for a pretty good price. It's done 47,000kms so hopefully in pretty good condition. It's already done the 50k service a year ago, so I'm planning to get the 75k service done or should I just get a minor service done at this point?

Looking forward to picking it up this Friday!
