Tow related question....

Postby beavis » Sat Mar 27, 2010 9:40 pm

Ok can anyone help me with the following?

Is the US 2005 Legacy the same chassis as the 2005 Lib, in terms of fitting a tow-bar?

Also is there any difference between the chassis/tow-bar on the AU 4cyl and the h6's?

Just curious because it is considerably cheaper to buy a bar in the US and have it shipped than it is to purchase here ATM

Just how much difference can it be??? is the American bar Australian compliant??? I
I couldn't be bothered to import such a small value item for all the problems especially from USA which would have been made in Mexico or China

I still cant understand why people purchase $50 -$60k cars and skimp on things maybe they should have just purchased a commondoor  cheap and cheer full

Speak for yourself!I use this forum for and research to hopefully answer my questions. Not for bragging rights.

I dont really think that $150 worth of steel shaped into a tow bar is worth $900au, especially when you can buy it overseas and ship it here and still save $250.

Also going by the images I can find they look identical to the items available here in Aus. and may well have come from the same factory in china. They carry the same load rating here as the US and its not like the US is a third world lawless country....

As for your comment about the purchase price, I certainly am not silly enough to pay $50-60k for my car, that's why I bought it 4year old and paid less than half that.

And now back to the original point.... I was under the impression this was a FORUM, were people can post questions and just maybe get a civilised response, I may be wrong or this may just be a utopian dream of mine but that's what I had hoped for, thanks for your insightful feedback though....

Hayman Reese make AUDM Subaru tow gear, look them up. Surely shipping would make it a waste of money to import it? (hence why some would ask why bring something like a tow bar in from the U.S.??)

P.S. lots of us paid $50K+ for our cars, I have the luxury of claiming depreciation. Maybe Buddah was implying you were a bit tight? (my opinion)

I gathered he was implying that, however he did not consider the simple fact that sometimes circumstances change in peoples lives and they need to try and make do, saving money were ever they can.

The above implies that perhaps that you think we are all silly for buying new expensive cars. Anyway, Hayman Reese, look them up.

Haymen Reese make the actual tow-bar for subaru anyway over here.

About 600 fitted at a tow bar joint. Don't bother with genuine.

Remember factory tow bars come with Auto gearbox coolers too which is where a lot of the expense is - I paid $1200 for mine from Subaru. I realise you may have a manual so this may not be the case.

DUDE!! get over your self.
you seem like the type of person that would remove 1 of his ribs.
the tranny cooler is more than just a bypass plug.\

i you want a second hand one, i will be pulling one of this weekend from a Gen3 outback.
it was the tow pack fitted from the subaru. Already using the tranny-cooler for my spec-c rack. :D
not sure on the compatabilty between Gen3/4, but would guess they are the same?
most 4x4 shops can quote on a tow hitch. maybe they can comment on compatability.
Freight would be easy, as the RS lib club are down here in melbourne next week for the National. Send back with them.
