Fix rust inside exhaust

Postby nytrojen » Sun Mar 21, 2010 1:12 pm

Hey guys, I bought a set of Phat quads second hand in gunmetal. There was a teeny speck of rust on the inside of the outlets when i bought them, but it seems to have gotten worse recently.

I guess the best thing to do is clean the rust off and spray the inside with hi temp paint.

Question is: should I be concerned about it? The rust seems to be more concentrated towards the inside of the outlets.

Unfortunately one of the by-products of combustion is water and unless you've got stainless steel you are always going to get this problem. My advice FWIW is to lightly clean the rust then hit it with a good rust convertor (just follow the instructions on the container), which will kill the rust then paint with the HT paint.

I started out with nothing....and I've still got most of it left.....

Thanks for the reply moggy, and the HT paint is drying as we speak 8) I did pretty much as you advised. Luckily, the rust seemed to be confined to the outlets, there didn't appear to be any inside the muffler body. Though the charcoal paint I bought doesn't quite match up to Phat's gunmetal, so there's a bit of lighter overspray that looks a bit odd. Hopefully some carbon deposits will find their way there and cover it up :P

I'll try and get some pics up tonight. The left exhaust is sitting a lot lower than the right and I haven't been arsed to fix it up yet (I assume that once I loosen off the bolts and jiggle it around it should fit better). At least the bright orange rust is gone though 8)

Also castek - the quads fit no problem on a 2.5i. These are Phat quads like (almost) everyone else has
