Turbo inlet pipe perished

I have a MY04 2.0GT and developed a noise from the turbo. I have tracked it to a perished area, on the cold air inlet pipe where it is hose clamped to the forward edge of the turbo.

I have tried removing this pipe which runs from the front of the inlet manifold, under the manifold and is clamped to the front of the turbo, but it has numerous lines attached to it under the manifold.

Has anyone had experience with removing this pipe that could be of help.

A friend advises me there is not a genuine part available in the country, so I am happy to change to a silicone or aftermarket part if one is suitable

Tim, I have a spare stock turbo inlet pipe if you're interested in purchasing.

Removal is a bit difficult without taking the manifold off, but it's still easier than fitting a larger silicon one.

Removal is a bit difficult without taking the manifold off, but it's still easier than fitting a larger silicon one.

You don't have to take the manifold off. Two persons makes the job heaps easier.

We replaced it without taking it off, but certainly had to upbolt the manifold and pull most connectors around the inlet manifold off to raise it high enough to gain access to the piping that plugs in under it.

Unfortunately this did not fix the turbo/intake/exhaust sound.

My mate who is very much a hands on guru with this stuff has not heard this noise before but we are hoping we have just blown a gasket or a crack in the dump pipe.

He never heard the noise before we started as the car was half disassembled when he arrived yesterday.

Frustrating as ....

What sort of noise is it producing? Did you have enough access the check for freeplay on the turbo shaft? Did your mate hear the noise after it had been reassembled?

Keep us posted as I'm sure a few of us with cars with 150k+ klms on them may experience similar problems in the near future and this info will be invaluable.

Yes my friend heard it only after it was reassembled. He has been around many blown turbos and has never quite heard this noise before.

Best way to describe the sound, only when under boost (even only gentle) the old air raid siren sound you hear in WW2 movies. As soon as you get off the right pedal it stops almost instantly, as soon as the boost drops.

On the inlet side of the turbo, the fins are in near perfect shape with no freeplay in the shaft at all. It spins freely.

I will post my findings ....

Tim is in Sydeny, but I think the problem has been traced to a stuffed compressor on the VF38.
