For the record I will say here that I sometimes do 65 in a 60 zone, call me crazy but I don't think that is unsafe.

I wont call you crazy. I totally agree. Unfortunately they are baseing most of these policies on the lowest common denominator and I think we'd all agree that 70% of the freaks on the road should have to re-sit their driving tests. The driving skill (or lack thereof) of some people is truly scary.

There is a time and place for having a bit of a fang, and in suburbia is certainly not it. And a high powered car on your P plates makes it even worse, it's just lucky that no-one else was hurt. Common sense just isn't common anymore

i like to stick my foot in to it, other wise why buy 3l bspec, but how can you say speed isnt an issue. its simple if he wasnt doing the speed he was, he would still be alive. firstly he would not have "lost it" and secondly the tree would not have jumped out in front of him. driver training,driver ability,driver bullshit, doesnt matter how good you are,solid immovable objects that line suburban streets will always win when they stop you dead from that sort of speed.

I wanted to stay away from replying as it is now becoming more of a sensitive topic.

I used to believe in driver training, but having confidence only means you "think" ur in control. You can control the vehicle to a certain extent, however you cannot control the environment around it.

I think its hard to argue that there is one cause to these events. But i would say wateva you can control and prevent, you should take all pre-cautions to do so like NOT speeding. (Yes yes i know im not an angel myself, but this is definately a wake up call thats too close to home).

Cops seems to be stricter now in NSW, going back to confiscating cars like the WRX today on the anzac bridge. Becareful on the roads ppl.

I guess when you really break it down, some people 'can' and some people 'can't'.

Broad brush, training will only ever give those that 'can't' the illusion that they 'can'. Where as those that 'can' get a better understanding of the parameters. If that makes sense?

The guys who race cars obviously 'can', and given the same situation would most likely not wrap a new GT around a tree. Certainly they'd have the brains not to be drag racing on a suburban street, but that's hardly the point.

In retrospect, maybe agreeing would be easier, don't speed and you'll be OK. I see the government 'SPEED KILLS' campaign is working.

I've done a bit of safety driving course before in my previous car in a Honda.

I can agree that even myself, I can go over the limit by 5-10km/h and feel confident and you really don't think it makes a difference.

But in that safety course, there is always something that clicks *eventually...* that tells me that even 5km faster from 10 -> 15 -> 20 etc.. does make a difference in handling and stopping and you realise.. wow! if I was only going 5km slower, i actually handle or navigate better and of course.. braking distance is less..

get out of control at that speed and thats the result, on a suburban street.race car drivers do it regularly but they have nothing to hit that is standing still,and when it is (standing still)the result you get is brocky and that other poor guy at bathurst last year

Look since they made it 3 points for a 15 and under it might be possible I hit cruise at up to but always under 30km/h over on Sydney's motorways (slowing for cameras). Same points just a slightly larger fine. If you commute out of peak hour, the motorways are great for it because you are not endangering anyone by lack of braking distance. And on most of the inner city motorways the cops can't use lidar thanks to work safe regs. Can't pull you over so you only have to check the rear view so you are not having your speed checked.

In peak hour you abide and do what everyone else is doing, regardless of the posted speed. This is all normal and also safe way to get about.

This sort of speeding is not street racing. It is making use of the road conditions.

There may be little or no discretion anymore in the enforcement of laws relating to speed but I feel that there is a spirit to the law and so I drive accordingly.

Empty road -> good surface -> no traffic entrances -> no cars -> rock on.

Burn me if you will but speeding if stamped out simply means we have some road that are over engineered. Try M2 at 2pm, not a car in sight.
