Few Mod Questions...

Postby Laps » Fri Feb 05, 2010 8:34 am

Somewhere down the track I will be purchasing a front lip, and may be looking in to a new grill.

For those with experience, could you please help me out with the following Q's...

1. Is there any major difference between the STI Front Lip, and the front Lip offered by ULTREX (other than price)?

2. Where can I get the following grill, but with mesh behind:
http://www.ultrex.com.au/subaru-liberty-my07-fibreglass-grill-p-303.html

ULTREX has one im after, but it is for a MY04- MY06, i have a MY08... I know zerosports have something similar, but I am unsure of price, as I cannot read Japanese therefore am having trouble navigating around the website :(
Also, I want black, not carbon fibre...

3. What are my options for getting such parts painted? Obviously I wouldnt get the lip painted, but for things such as eyelids, and the grill (if it doesnt match obsidian black pearl), what kind of prices am i looking at (to have it professionally sprayed)? My father has a spray kit/compressor, so I guess if i could get the right paint from somewhere, he could do it, do subaru charge a bucket for paint or what?

4. To install a diffuser, is it just a matter of double sided tape? Im thinking about getting this one:
http://www.ultrex.com.au/subaru-liberty-my07-fibreglass-diffuser-b-style-p-309.html

Thanks :)

1. The lips both look very similar. Hence Rob calling it an "STi style" lip. Only those who notice the missing sticker and slight differences (Rob's version looks a tiny bit thicker toward the wheel arches IMO) will tell the two apart.

2. Try Japanparts.com. The site is in english, so you can at least find what you want, even if it's not the price you want. You can get the mesh from autobarn/supercheap if it doesn't come with it

3. Eyelids will cost around $240 to get professionally painted and installed, probably the same for the spoiler, as they have to mix up a batch of paint for the job. If you get both done at once it'll be significantly cheaper. Ask a local panel beater/installation shop. I don't think Subaru will paint aftermarket parts, but i could be wrong.

4. No idea about the diffuser though. Contact Rob regarding this

The material on them is slightly different - the genuine STi one flexes a bit more, is a stronger/thicker material and is a smoother finish than the Ultrex one. (I've had experience with four of them :P)

I wouldn't be using just double sided tape personally. That shit starts to lose contact after a while and when going 100km+/hour i wouldn't be happy if i was driving behind you when it comes flying at me.

Experience with 4 of what? Ultrex's or STI's? Why so many, keep breaking? So I take it you prefer the STI one then?

Main difference from the STI and the Ultrex STI-style lip, is that the STI one obviously has the badge in the centre, but also the construction is a really strong black coloured resin. The Ultrex one is Polyurethane which is slightly more pliable but the edges aren't as sharp.

Good enough for me though it's less than half the price :). Also with Polyurethane over many years it can become faded or hazy unless you paint it.

Why so expensive for eyelids ! O.O They are tiny lol... surely they arent that hard to install...

And with regards to subaru, I meant can you just buy the paint rather than have them do it lol

if you have a black car then just buy the CF eyelids, piss easy to install them too. http://www.hkc-speed.com/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=70

I am running an Ultrex CF front lip and it is perfect in terms of fitment. I replaced my subaru oem sti lip and the wholes, brackets line up perfectly and uses the same bolts to fix it.

I am running an HKC-Speed rear CF diffuser which I installed using 3m double sided tape only, 18 months on no issues at all.

Because they need to mix up a whole batch of paint, and that's what's gonna cost you. Alternatively you can get a pressure pack of paint mixed up from Autobarn for $49.95, which is what I did.

Sounds good to me, did they get the colour right? What about how it has a metallic fleck through the paint?

What did you use this on, eyelids, grill etc?

Colour came out spot on, with the metallic fleck. Have a look at my thread about painting eyelids.

Add some blonde eyelashes while you're at it. I saw a wikid WRX in Sweden with the same thing they used real hair from a wig maker.
