MY07 Mcintosh Subwoofer Failure

Postby Jimmy S » Mon Jan 11, 2010 6:19 pm

OK... So my sub is starting to crackle... not sure when it got pwned, but its failing now anyway...

Thinking about checking if Subaru want to replace it for me under warranty, but given the most likely option is that they wont, what are my options?

I'm not so into doof doof anymore, and really do like the stocker system for everyday listening... and would rather not have a box in the boot if possible!

Take a look into the Vibe Exact8, it's an 8" woofer that should slot straight in although I haven't got around to replacing mine yet. It's a great sound woofer though and the specs are suitable for free-air. FHRX Studios here in Sydney sell them. And I think they do free postage nationwide (check their website) if you can't find a distributor. I think they are selling them for about $200 or so.

Marty and the guys have done a bit of work for me in the past and Marty is always happy to answer any questions.

Jimmy,

Try to get the specs for the actual OEM Subaru sub driver. The sensitivity is very important when considering the low wattage output of the OEM amps in the car. I'd suggest (but with no data) that the OEM driver is quite sensitive BUT with a low power handling.

It means that all those monster magnet subs with low sensitivity would be useless without a bigger amp.

May I suggest a PM to "Bumpstop" on Perth WRX ( sorry Ric :) ) . He is an absolute wealth of information.

Cheers for the advice guys... keep it coming!

Will definitely be chatting to macey(bumpstop) over the weekend seeing as we're both entrants for MV2010 for Perth-WRX... :)

I've also tracked down an 8" Pioneer Free-Air sub as well...

Nice. Though I think that Pioneer subs in general are a bit power hungry? Not sure, just had it mentioned to me. Maybe you might need something a little more efficient?

You will probably find that a lot of subs this size have a sensitivity of around 85db to 87db or so. Another to look at may be the Digital Designs 1508...

They don't show full specs on the website that I can see, but they have been used in a few free-air applications that I know of with some pretty good results, although as with most DD gear it is aimed more towards SPL than SQ.

As with all audio gear though, it's up to personal preference and budget etc... best bet is to find a distributer near you and take a listen to the gear.

Agree on the listening part, although I'm not sure there'll be too many places with an 8" free-air sub running of a small amp setup to demo!

In some sort of possible good news, Subaru have said if the speaker has "failed" then they will cover it under warranty for me! :D

Much <3 for City Subaru! :P
