do you find that it's when you engage the clutch with very low revs, and/or when feathering the clutch such as reverse parallel parking?

Mine has this annoying chirp/squeak too it drives me mad. Had the car up on a hoist once it seems to be coming from inside bellhousing.

My clutch does slip so it's not worn out yet. I wonder if it's due to the clutch face or flywheel having areas which have glazed?

usually people swap out to a single mass flywheel (from a 2.5 impreza RS)

i THINK u need the matching clutch as well.

i had subaru replace my flywheel twice in 2 years cos of the noise.

this is not going to affect the car's performance. it's just annoying to hear it.

hope this helps.

The dual mass flywheel is not cheap from what I've read, it's over $1,000 for the part then you pay quite a few hours of labour. Might as well get a new clutch plate and pressure plate, throwout bearing at the same time.

<cough>

Subaru prices around $3k for dual mass flywheel, clutch, and all other associated hardware...

mine was done under warranty - before Vin left STi... otherwise I suspect I would have had to put up with it...

the new clutch is a lot lighter in action than the old one too...

I'll prob wait until my clutch is due for replacing before I replace the flywheel; I'll just live with the occasional noise for now.

Exedy have an OEM replacement clutch kit available it's around $850.00 for clutch plate, pressure plate + cover, release bearing. In terms of the flywheel this place appears to have aftermarket versions for both dual mass and single mass flywheels to suit our cars:

http://www.directclutchservices.com.au/Flywheel.htm

I'm going to do my research and see if it is OK to install a single mass flywheel instead, as dual mass ones apparently aren't that reliable for "hard driving". Come to think of it I didn't start getting the noise until I had done a few 3000rpm launches shortly after I bought this car.

from my experience, the noise will become more common and marginally louder.

i know that you can replace the DMF with a SMF as i was offered the option from subaru docklands when i had the 2.5i.

however, i sold the car just before i got it replaced and the new owner had elected to keep the DMF.

:)

I am going to send the cursed DMF to where it belongs, to the scrap metal recycling bin! By all reports changing to a standard solid flywheel is no problem and this is actually what Subaru did after running the DMF for a short period in 2004-2005.

The only pro for the DMF is apparent improved preservation of the gearbox and reduced NVH, but since it's the same gearbox pre and post 2004-2005 I can't imagine reliability was really that much of an issue. The many cons as we are finding here, is all the extra moving parts are just susceptible to noise, make it more fragile when driven hard occasionally, and bloody expensive to replace especially since the limited clutch choices cost more too.

Pros for a solid flywheel is better feel (subjective, but it would be from an enthusiast driving point of view), slightly more noise as the revs drop, better heat dissipation and durability, easy to re-surface when changing clutch, and of course much greater choice of which clutch to use and at much lower cost.

For the first time I am not that fussed about preserving my clutch anymore because I want to replace it!

Exedy have a full kit which will do the complete conversion, about $1,100.00 for the parts and around 5-6 hours labor. Most independents charge around $80.00 per hour: http://www.exedy.com.au/SpecSheet.aspx? ... owId=64468

I'm a bit confused here.

I also had a squeaking noise when start in the morning and in gear 1 only. Also when I turn the steering wheel to the max(maybe need to change timing belt)?

About DMF or SMF, what is the different? Is it making the noise disappear? Is it going to make the clutch heavier or something?

Sorry, but I'm a newbie for this problem..

Thanks
