I haven't checked this thread in a while.... and there are some really nice shots posted.

Here are some of my old shoots, 30mins trekking into the heart land of Tasmania will get you to some of the most peaceful places in Australia.



If I remember correctly this was at Horseshoe Falls.

what can amateurs expect with some good advice and no photoshop?

i wouldnt know how to use photo shop ... none of my shots are digitally altered

Landscape and automotive shots aren't worth digitally enhancing, your skills with a DLSR should suffice. None of my above shots have been tickled.

However when doing weddings and pro portraiture shots, the custmer will request enhancements such as blemish removal, abit more highlights here and there and the results are worth the effort. What the customer pays for the customer gets

so from all of this is just learning how to use all of the manual functions properly on your dslr.

is there any good website that a noob can scroll through to build up his expertise...ie start out doing dusk photos, move onto moving sport type scenes etc

cos one of the biggest differences i can see with these pics is your clarity, they are so sharp so detailed and every colour is true.

so from all of this is just learning how to use all of the manual functions properly on your dslr.[/quote]Not even manual settings, you can use some of the semi-manual functions (aperture or shutter priority) and get the effect.
First, learn what shutter, aperture, ISO etc. do, and then work backwards by building the scene in your head. What will change if I change this value? What are the implications?

As above - understanding the implications of changing shutter speed and aperture will allow you to think on your feet and decide what settings for what application.

cos one of the biggest differences i can see with these pics is your clarity, they are so sharp so detailed and every colour is true.

I do some slight adjustments in post processing, most of them being white balance, crop and rotate. I'm starting to do a bit more dodging and burning now, and going through some of my old photos, I can see where I can improve on the final output by spending a bit more time in the digital darkroom.
You'll find in regards to clarity, resizing something something down for web-use size will improve sharpness in most circumstances.

Hey Chris,

Shooting with a DLSR is always a learning experience, the best thing is to get out there and take as many shots as you can, testing out different settings, ISO, F stops, focal lengths... the list goes on! When you get back home and on the pc you'll see which shots turned out best and look at the settings and try to remember how you shot it for future shots. It all comes with practice mate.

Do a simple search in Google, there are heaps of "New to DSLR's" sites out there. Have fun!
