Create mesh grill?

Postby talev788 » Wed Dec 23, 2009 3:26 pm

I may be blind as there is probably something like this on the forum already.

I'm over my honeycomb stock grill and wanna change it to mesh but I have no idea what exactly needs to be done to create a good mesh grill.

Is there a how to somewhere or does anyone have the time to explain to me the steps on how to do it??
Any help is much appreciated

Thanks guys

The simplest way is to buy one mate! I dont know if anyone has "converted" their grill to a mesh one.

I made one for my old Forester. Basically you need to cut out all the honeycomb bits with a hack saw, dremmel etc and then bog, sand and prep the entire thing. Use the mesh you can get from Super cheap etc and stick it with either sikaflex or something like q-bond. It's a time consuming process but very satisfying in the end. As for painting, I used a colour matched pressure pack from Autobarn and finished ith with a couple of layers of clear coat.

It's quiet easy mate, but as said it takes a few hours.

Check out Rslibertyclub.org and go to the DIY section, there is a write up in there on how to do it. It shows how to ge done on Gen 1's from memory but it will give you an idea on how to do it.

Hop this helps.

I made one on my old car, from the stock grille:

I have a feeling your mesh grille will be hard to cut out to modify though.

For my Corolla's grille, I got a soft metal nail epoxied to the back of the grille and then I hooked the mesh through it. It means you can easily replace the mesh, and it also gives it a bit of flex.
