Latest service and tune

Postby jeffas4966 » Tue Nov 24, 2009 3:51 pm

Hi All,
Just wanted to share my findings with you. Took my car in for its 12.5k service at Maximum Motorsport herein Perth. This was my first service having bought the car in Qld and had it ECUTEK tuned over there.

Granted there are differences in dyno's but I was very surprised to find that when the car was dyno'd at MM it actually read lower than std, a pitiful 88kwatw (3rd gear). The ecu was reset (to fix the multiplier, whatever this is) and the dyno went up to 115kwatw.

Steve then removed this map and entered his own map and my car went straight up to 130kwatw (not too bad for a stinking hot Perth day).

Apparently the multipiler is an indicator of how the engine is running, a good engine tune will run a 1, mine was down to 0.4.

So a 40kwatw improvement for me, before and after on the same dyno and the car feels more responsive and hopefully more economical (as it was crap before).

As always very interested to hear your thoughts

Cheers

Jeff

The multiplier is the IAM' which is an offset the ECU applies to the ignition advance depending on feedback from various other sensors in the motor and measurements in the ECU.

Sounds like yours was running a huge amount of retard, most likely due to sensed detonation and was also overfuelling to help. I'd be questioning whoever tuned it, although since power did improve with an ecu reset - maybe you picked up low octane fuel somewhere forcing the ecu to compensate?. Sounds like you have the right tune now

Steve knows his stuff and will def have improved on your previous tune I suggest. The tmic sitting in the hot sun at MMS and then going on to the dyno will def see timing being pulled. Interesting that Steve did the run in 3rd gear though only got 130kw. Steve ran all the 6MT cars in 5th gear that day. Mine sat in the sun most of the morning and the best run in of three I got 145KW and that was when he sprayed the i/c with water prior and during the run. Here is the dyno chart from the Perth WRX Dyno Day we did at MMS a few months ago.

Thanks guys, for your input.

Further to the above tune I now seem to have really bad fuel economy. Immediately after the tune, I went to the servo to fuel up (have always used 98 ron since I bought the car 6 weeks ago). Granted I have only done 70kms or so but my trip computor says I am only getting 18 l/100kms in sport mode, with normal driving (barely half throttle used at best.

Have called Steve at MM and suggests I use the tank fill method (fair enough) and he believes the tune is fine. Just wondering what could cause such poor fuel economy.

Cheers

I had very similar problems with my 06 GT sti.
First time I put it on teh Dyno it was struggling to make 112kw atw. IAM was down at .6 or something like that. I'd tried all different types of fuel and driving styles, but it kept going back down..

Parso_rex from on here took it for a day, took a heap of timing out of it and improved the tune a bit.. it's now making a much more respectable ~140kw on the same dyno. :)
IAM hasn't gone below 1 since then either..

I've just done another car here MY02 WRX finished half say an hour ago. Already had an XB tune on it but it was only 118 atw with IAM down to 12 (0.75 for the new age guys) and heaps of timing being pulled. In short pinging a lot. Worse than yours steve. In fairness it was never dyno tuned in the first place only road tuned. Pulled some timing in the right spots and its up to 135 now but its only the weener TD04 turbo and it won't boost past 14.5 psi ....restrictor pill and all that crap, can't be arsed.
Every one of your gen libs I see Steve now has the same weirdness
