Which wheels to get?

Postby AdamW » Fri Nov 20, 2009 2:22 pm

Okay I bought these Rays Gram Lights - 57Optimise a few weeks back (to be used as track wheels), I ended up really liking the look of them so I have left them on… but I am not too happy with the offset or 3mm spacer plates (needed to clear Brembo's) so I have been looking at similar sets and I have found the following two.. Will the lower weight of the SSR's make a noticeable difference to performance?

Rays Gram Lights - 57Optimise

Work Emotion XD9 Wheel - 18x8.0 +45 - Not sure of weight but know they are the heavier wheel - $2,135

Genuine SSR Type F Forged Wheels - 18x8.0 +48 - 7.6kg / wheel - $3,090

Less weight of the wheels makes the most overall difference out of reducing any other unsprung weight item, since you are then also reducing unsprung rotating mass which has a great effect on cornering performance.

Since you said you will be tracking the car, then I would say that there is a noticeable difference when driving at more than 8/10.

I was going to get them painted in the 'time attack' theme – Black with red rim..

But the biggest size they come in are 18 inch. They also come in black with red ring

I ended up getting the SSR Type F Forged Wheels - 18x8.0 +48.. That’s about all I will do with the red lip (keep it subtle).. They should arrive within the next few days.

If you are using them for track wheels then I suggest you go with a 17" rim for weight reduction. I bought a set a of used MY02-04 STI rims that clear the brembos without spacers. Paid $1100 for the set which came with rubber (50% tread). They are gold but I plan to get them painted flat black.

I am not sure if they will be much lighter than 7.6kg.. I originally wanted purely track wheels, but then liked the look of them so decided to get a set of daily drivers in the 'time attack' theme..

If i am happy with the SSR's I will probably end up selling both other sets of wheels.. So I should break even.. Tyres for 18's (over Kahn 19's) will be cheaper in the long run too..

I hope they clear Brembo's....
