What oil to use? (and general servicing questions for 3.0rb)

I'm thinking of servicing my liberty 3.0r-b myself, as close to $300 for an oil change and filter from Subaru seems pretty expensive.

Can anyone offer some suggestions on what oil to use?

What sort of oil is used by a Subaru service centre?

Is changing the oil and filter on a liberty 3.0r-b an easy or difficult task?

Anything I should look out for when doing a service myself? This is the 62,500km service.

i have been using Castrol Magnetec with no problems.
not much to canging the oil.

remove undertray.
bucket under sump.. undo sump plug=17mm.
move pan under oil filter as well, undo oil filter.
wait 5 minute.
opposite of above, except mack sure you put a small amount of oil on filter seal.
turn filter by hand till the rubber just bites, then 1/4 turn more.
fill oil till full.

We use Penrite HPR 10 at work for all cars up to 150k kms. Do your filter as well. For the extra $10 each time you change your oil you'll keep everything nice and fresh.

Check and top up all under bonnet fluids and 'nut and bolt' critical components ie check everything is secure and tight. If you have the facilities rotate the tyres and check the pressures.

Still using Dino oil and happy with it. Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 and I change it out every 6 months/6,000Kms whichever occurs first. (I only drive around 12,000Kms a year)

I have read reviews of the Edge Sports which included used oil analysis.

It basically does everything that it claims to do which is basically protect your engine against excessive wear when used in extreme conditions (track work, towing etc). Until I start tracking my car more I am still happy with using the Magnatec. But as already pointed out, when Edge Sports is on sale it is the same price as full price Magnatec!

Also in a nutshell, from what Bob the oil guy says Synthetic oils flow better than dino oil. Flow is not to be confused with viscosity which is the thickness of the oil.

The one caveat is that once you make the choice to switch to synthetic oil, you should not switch back to dino since the engine will have become accustomed to the higher flowing oil.

My H6 has done over 170000k now and runs as perfect as the day it was bought, doesn't use one drop of oil between 8000k oil changes I do with Castrol Edge Sythetic 5w-30w, first 5000k from new it got a non friction modified dino oil to bed everything in, and every oil change after that was Castrol Edge 5w-30w.

I wouldn't put anything but full synthetic in my H6 and it's half the price $29.90 when on special at Supercheap than other full synthetics, and it's the perfect weight for the H6 @ 5W-30W.

Hey it's just what I read written on the back of the bike shed wall ok!

Apparently dino oils have a certain substance in it which leads to (intended) swelling of seals in the engine. When you switch to synthetic there is the absence (or less) of this substance which eventually leads to the seals shrinking. Modern engines generally can cope with making this change once. Going back to dino oil again will lead to the seals expanding. The engine can generally tolerate one cycle of this before you start getting oil leaks and/or problems with sluggish performance due to the seals running too tightly.

Again, this is what I have read (yes it is a big wall it was written on).

No, you will not.

No, you will not. This is an all too common misconception, and one with no scientific data to support it.

When switching from a mineral oil to a synthetic, or vice versa, you will potentially leave a small amount of residual oil in the engine. That's perfectly okay because synthetic oil and mineral-based motor oil are compatible with each other.

There is no problem with switching back and forth.

And to be clear, there is no problem with switching back and forth between synthetic and mineral based oils.

In fact, many of our customers who operate in areas where temperature fluctuations can be especially extreme, switch from mineral oil to synthetic oil for the colder months.

They then switch back to mineral oil during the warmer months.

There was a time, years ago, when switching between synthetic oils and mineral oils was not recommended if you had used one product or the other for a long period of time.

Some operators experienced problems with seal leakage and high oil consumption but changes in additive chemistry and seal material have taken care of those issues.

Why change oils from mineral to synthetic? The biggest benefit of changing to synthetic motor oil in the winter is improved start-ability.

There's also semi-synthetic motor oil which is a mix of synthetic base oil and mineral base oil. Many operators are experiencing successes similar to seasonal use of synthetics by going with this option.

With that said, there is no need to be concerned about compatibility of synthetic, mineral or semi-synthetic engine oil. As I've stated, you can often benefit by changing to synthetic or semi-synthetic oil in colder climates.

Just be sure you're always using a quality product like Shell ROTELLA motor oils to get the protection you need.
