Suggest me a Sound System

Postby jamesvdm » Thu Nov 12, 2009 7:11 pm

For Christmas I want to set up a half decent sound system in the Liberty ('05, base model).

My only requirement is that is sounds GOOD when LOUD.

What can I do? High quality 6x9s? Do I need an amp for these? A sub will take up too much boot space so that's probably out of the question.

Ideas much appreciated.

Hmm... you may have trouble shoehorning 6x9s into your car. I'd say best bet is get some efficient speakers. Boston speakers are pretty good, and decent price/performance. Good bang for buck. You won't get any bass though, so be warned, if you want it loud and clear, you'll need at least an 8" sub. Which isn't too bad, cos there's a port for it in the parcel shelf. You can run a Boston G108 off a tiny amp just to offload the bass from the splits/rears.

Do you have a budget in mind?

Sound deaden the front doors and get a decent pair of splits, they will produce plenty of bass. I was quite surprised at how good the stock speakers sound with just sound deadening after hearing Will's car.

Or do that... the main thing is to get rid of the crappy factory head unit. Not so much an issue for the Macs... but the standard kenwood/clarion sounds atrocious!

Thanks for the info.

Budget is <$500, I'll probably try to source second hand even to get good stuff within the budget.

What do you mean by a port for the sub?

I didn't realise the head unit played such a large part in sound quality.

Trust us on this. There's a few guys on the forums, myself included that can attest to the massive improvement in quality once we replaced the factory head unit with an aftermarket one. Clarity, tone and bass all improved.

I just realised that you have an MY00 Rex... so this may or may not directly relate to you. Sorry bout the mixup! In that case, you won't have the port for the 8" sub. Hmm... in that case I'm probably not the person to ask, lol. If your speakers are in good condition, then replacing the head unit may or deadening the doors etc be the way to go. If not, it may be best to replace those first with some efficient drivers.

I'd say for a limited budget of $500.00 get a $300.00 head unit from JVC for example and then fit some 6.5" coax speakers into the front doors for about $200.00 from VDO Dayton, Polk, or Orion are some decent budget brands.
