Probably because no one has done an oil analysis, or used their aftermarket filter long enough to notice any detriment. Either that or they just don't care because they won't keep their car for long.

Here's a good test comparing different types of filter media (HKS would fall into the foam category):

Bob's forum also has a few threads on this as well.

Also there are quite a few threads on NASIOC forums about aftermarket filters and high Silica counts in oil analysis.

Sorry I cannot link up threads directly I have read them all in passing and I have not bookmarked them.

+1

The chaps on Bobistheoilguy call them "rock catchers". Still waiting for someone to tell me why go panel filter, apart from the washable bit. If they increased performance, then maybe I'd change to one at risk of increasing grit intake, but no one thinks they do, so why? :dntknw:

My filter hasn't been replaced in the time I've had it and that's nearly 30k now. Guess I should think about getting another OEM sometime in the next 50,000km

Have you looked at your cabin air filter yet Smythie? :) You may have a jungle in there lol.

Could well have too. The air fan doesn't have enough strength to pull a hole in the filter so it can wait until I get around to it/remember it. Not much of a problem really. :D

I use mine on recirc as much as possible (especially if I'm not using the heater/aircon at all). Although once you've done it once the filter is not that hard to change, they are still bloody expensive at around $75 and with no aftermarket one available.
