I was going to fit one of these for the washability factor, but then I read about people who have used them and found spikes in Silica (sand) levels in their used oil analysis results, which immediately dropped back down when they switched back to the normal filter.

If you're not planning to keep your car for a while it probably isn't a concern though.

From my experience, not that much more induction noise but definitely something there.
Also take the resonator out while you're doing it. A bit louder and you might as well anyway... 10 min mod too

Probably because no one has done an oil analysis, or used their aftermarket filter long enough to notice any detriment. Either that or they just don't care because they won't keep their car for long.

Here's a good test comparing different types of filter media (HKS would fall into the foam category):

Also there are quite a few threads on NASIOC forums about aftermarket filters and high Silica counts in oil analysis.

I have run with the same HKS panel filter for two years and have no issues with sand getting in this way and yes I have had the engine oil examined on more than one occasion.

That would have been me. I used the oem filter, did an oil analysis, used the HKS filter, did an oil analysis, then used the oem again and did another analysis. Silicon levels jumped quite significantly when I was using the HKS filter. Silicon=dirt. Not good.

As teK said, it probably won't make much of a difference if you are not keeping your car for a long time but I intend keeping mine for some time so I want to keep it running perfectly.

I purchased two filters and they cost me $156AU delivered. 3 weeks was a bit ordinary I thought. I've bought stuff from japanparts and had it in 3 days.

Bull Terrier is fully worked. No more mods required. Air filter on his date would be good though.
