Alarms & CANBUS

Postby GTB Liberty » Sun Jul 26, 2009 8:53 pm

Guys investigating alarms.

Have a few questions:

1. Is the MY08 Liberty CANBUS?
2. If YES, does that mean I'm limited to CANBUS alarms only?
3. Is the Subaru remote key code hopping?
4. Any recommendations for alarm brand?
5. NEED to be able to turn off microwave/ultrasonic sensors on occasion due to dog?
6. Turbo timer would be nice (after long country drives).
7. Window closing would be good.

Thank for the help.

Hi I know that my MY04 uses CANBUS but only for high bandwidth systems like the ABS, SRS, EBD etc. The purpose is to reduce the amount of wiring loom needed and hence save weight. Systems like the body control module including the alarm do not use the CANBUS system.

Not sure if the Subaru system is key hopping; the earlier ones were NOT (2003) and I am not sure from which year they added the feature, if they have at all.

Mongoose make a really good integrated system, the M80G which has the options you want (microwave is an addon; standard it has dual stage shock and also glassbreak sensor). Can disable the additional sensors on arming if you wish. You can also add window closing modules easily.

I was originally going to get the M80G but had concerns about whether the factory keyless entry transceiver had key hopping so I opted for a different system which has its own keyfobs (I have disconnected the factory keyless entry module).

Yea - that's the system I had in mind.

Can anyone give a clear answer RE code hopping with the 2008 keys yet. I believe it was answered for 2009 models as YES.

Finally an answer . . . 2008 has rolling code keys.

Andrew firstly you dont need a turbo timer with Subaru's now, waste of money. Yes I believe you will need one that works with canbus and suggest you just look at the Brandt alarm as they are well tried and tested for Subaru's.

I am going to have to disagree re Brandt systems.

I hear more stories about them locking the owner out than keeping a thief out (check wrx.com.au, rexnet.com.au) including first hand having to pick a mate up from 7-11 when it locked him out when he stopped to get petrol.

The problem is that they insist to install and service the system, so when you are locked out or have a fault you are at their mercy even if it's 4am on a Sunday morning. I.e. leave your car where it is or tow it to a secure location, then tow to Subaru on Monday morning.

Any Australian Standards approved system installed by a competent installer would be equally as secure as a Brandt. Cost less, and be owner serviceable/recoverable in an emergency.

LOL cool Story Tek. We have thousands of active members at Perth-WRX (I'm a moderator there so I see plenty) using the brandt and it works well at keeping the thieves from stealing their pride and joy. I have used one on previous wrx sti's and never had one problem.

You're one of the lucky ones then :).

I have always been against anything which is proprietary and does not allow the owner to service/make modifications as they see fit. Especially something which effectively has the car by its balls when it does not work.
