I have definitely not gone over it piece by piece, however if I was a betting man i would place the blame squarely on the amount of area/airflow the air filter offers, its pretty small. The Suzuki GTi 1.3 Swift that I owned back in 1988 had an air filter that big - almost.

Interesting about the air filter, I'm surprised there would be so much in it.
I was mucking around with our FG XR6 work ute on the dyno and with the air filter removed and the dyno fan blowing towards the air intake, all it gained was about 3Kw.

If the Impreza filter was the same as the Liberty, then I guess you would expect a bigger gain with the Liberty due to the larger engine.
