HID's Newbie

Postby Ritchie13890 » Wed Feb 25, 2015 3:12 pm

Hey guys,

As you may not know I am new to this forum. I have owned 2 liberty's a 2003 2.5 RX Manual and now a 2007 Liberty 2.5i Auto
Love them more than anything!

My question is: I know the 2007 model have a projector lense but I would love HID's where can I get them? What sort of cost and is there much install for them

Look foward to your input!

You should retrofit your headlights to get the most out of the HIDs.
HID kits in halogen projectors till produce uneven, crappy beams.

Hi guys, I am in the same position with my 05 GT looking to install HIDS. By "retrofit" - Do you mean change the halogen projector to one from a different model subi? I am a HID Noob as well, could you explain this in more detail as I am looking at investing in HID's as well, maybe I should be looking at a retrofit too?

Cheers!

HID, even without the proper HID projector housings, are definitely a good investment.

The proper housings properly direct all the light forward while the halogen housing scatters it a bit. The end result is that HID in halogen projector housings don't look quite as bright and up next to a wall you can see some of the scatter above the cut-off horizon which translates to some minor glare for on-coming drivers (but not to the level of highbeam-in-your-face).

In Australia, HID headlights are illegal if they do not also come equipped with auto-levelling motors to dip the headlights when towing things, or washers to wash dead bug bodies off that is said to refract light through the goo. That said, unless you or your car is already a cop magnet, you are unlikely to be pulled over for your headlights alone.

Fitting the globes themselves is very easy. I have a full pictorial guide here: viewtopic.php?f=45&t=23654&p=340518#p340507 (I used a Jaycar kit which you can now buy in H7 only without buying an H4 kit plus H7 globes anymore, or just get a FleaBay kit)

While you're at it, consider doing HID for your reverse lights too!
I was going to procrastinate, but I put it off...

In fact, this is not really the case (because bugs, as a rule, don't reflect light) - we lifted our specs straight from europe, where it snows. and when it snows, they salt. salt on the headlights causes massive issues with refracted light all over the place, so you have to mandate washers. In australia, we don't have salted roads, so we don't really need washers, but it's still there in black and white, so all cars come with them. Government at its finest.

Take apart your headlights, replace the projectors with HID ones, put it all back together. Sounds tough, but it's not. If you're a DIYer you can do it easily.
Loads of info/guides on the hidplanet forums.

Alternatively, if you can find factory HID headlights, throw them in. Don't even need the original ballasts and bulbs (you can put aftermarket/cheaper ones in).

Great feedback!

I got HKS180 to do my interior LEDs and number plate etc the other night. Can't recommend him enough, total legend and super friendly and helpful. I am going back to have the HID's installed in about a weeks time and match the fogs with the 5k Diamond Blue Halogen as I can't afford double HID's. Seems if installed in projector lens should be fairly safe unless towing under big load, which i almost never do so should be ok and the cars not a cop magnet

Yep, the cutoff will be similar so you won't be blinding people, but the beam won't. It'll be heaps brighter than halogen though.
Then if you retrofit and compare, you'll kick yourself for not retrofitting sooner.

What retrofit kit Is the right one to get? I have an 05 liberty GT. I looked on HID planet and there are loads of different retro kits, different brands, some called "mini" and different sizes. All very confusing to me. Anyone have a gen4 then have retrofitted and can recommend a good retro kit for my car? I can DIY myself on the install just don't know what kit to actually order! Thanks again to everyone for the great feedback, learning loads! Super helpful :)

Mini H1 uses H1 bulbs (aftermarket). Email them to see if they have brackets for Mini D2S (so you can use D2S bulbs if you wish).
