Positives and negatives for tyre width

Postby Wanted GT » Mon Aug 06, 2012 8:56 pm

Hi guys,
Sorry if this topic has already been covered, I'm still a newbie.

I recently purchased a 2004 GT wagon and it needs 4 new tyres. It is currently running 215/45 R17 Pirelli Dragons but they are worn out and I doubt I will get them again.
My question is what are the positives and negatives going to 225/45 R17 over 215/45 R17 on the stock GT rims.

Thanks

Tom

Forget the stock 17's. Upgrade your wheels! Kill 2 birds with 1 stone :D

Thanks guys,

I realise that both are fine, I guess what I was asking is why do people go larger? Is it just for looks? Or are there other benefits?

Wider generally gives you more rubber on the road, which should mean extra grip if you were to compare the same tyre in different sizes.

Larger rims with low profile tyres can also provide a more "direct feel" from the road, but this can also translate into harsher ride quality over bumps and potholes.

A popular choice is 18" rims that are 7.5" or 8" wide with 225/40/18 rubber.
I was going to procrastinate, but I put it off...
