Smoking pads and rotors

Postby garbo41610 » Sun Oct 17, 2010 9:03 am

Hi all,

Got the front rotors and pads changed yesterday to some RDA Slotted rotors and some Bendix pads. Anyways after coming back from a mates place down Old Bathurst Road (which is a steep windy road with hairpins etc, all the guys from the mountains and penrith will know the road) I noticed at the bottom of the hill at the lights there was a lot of smoke coming from the left side of the car. When i got home a couple of km's down the road I got out and found that there was a lot of smoke coming from both front rotors. I was driving under the 50km/h speed limit the whole way down and not braking excessively hard at all.

Is this normal??? Is there some sort of film on the pads and rotors that need to burn off during the bedding in period??? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

+1

Even though you weren't going that fast, it's still braking from a downhill descent. :D

What kind of Bendix pads? Their 4WD ones aren't too bad but I used to get them smoking on my last car after a hard drive. Any less than that, Performax, HD, standard etc, will definitely smoke without much effort.

Also what's the fluid level in your brake reservoir? Perhaps they didn't siphon some out when they put more pads/rotors in and your brakes are not retracting fully now. Jack up your car and see if you can turn the front wheels relatively easily by hand.

Its possible that it is just residual oil that was left on the rotors to stop them from rusting while sitting in a warehouse.

When I replaced my rotors on my previous car, they smoked a lot after the first couple of times I drove it. This went away pretty quickly and didn't affect braking during this time....
