Power Steering noise

Postby Newbie GT » Wed Dec 12, 2012 5:07 pm

Hi guys noticed that when car sitting at idle two things occur

1. When turning steering wheel all the way to full lock I hear like a squealing noise not loud at all like some cars.
2. The revs drop and you can hear the car pick it self back up like it could stall but never would.

Hope this makes sense.

Your power steering belt is probably in need of re-tensioning and/or replacing.

Also the revs drop due to the extra load put on the engine, they then raise due to a pressure sensor in the steering system which tells the engine to rev a bit to stop from stalling and help with the power steering assistance.

Its the steering wheel sending a signal to keep turning the wheel when its already on full lock.

I would say this sound would also be present when not sitting at idle, but I'm afraid someone might go and try that out at 100km/h... so ignore this last sentence.

It'd be a great idea not to turn the wheel at all until the car is in motion. It puts strain on a number of components which will lead to early failure. It's also not idea for your tyres.

It happens with any car I've ever driven that has power steering.
Just turning the wheels while stationary should be enough to get some of that without full lock.
Because when you aren't rolling you have to work harder to turn the wheel.

1. It's normal. Full lock puts more stress to the system. It is advisable not to keep it full lock too long i.e. when turning full lock, back off a tad so you're not overworking the power steering pump. Backing off slightly will make SFA difference to you turning circle, so it's a good habit to get into. Edit: it shouldn't squeal though. That's a belt issue.

2. Speed sensitive steering causes the fluctuation/drop in revs. From what I understand, it allows high level of power steering at low speeds but at high speeds it lessens out in order for the driver to feel more of the road for better, more precise handling, and no floaty steering feeling at high speeds like in some other cars.

What I noticed that's different to every other car I've driven is that putting pressure on the wheel even at full lock I don't make any noise at all... Out of habit I don't do this but every other car I've driven makes some noise when you hit full lock or hold it there...

Do we actually have speed sensitive steering?

I edited my post just to include that you shouldn't be hearing a squeal...that's a belt issue.

And yes, we do have speed sensitive steering :) I learnt Subaru had that feature when we were wondering similar things in our MY00 Forester. So Subaru power steering systems have had it for a while...

Back in ye oldie 2007 when I had no power steering, I wouldn't start turning the wheel until the wheels were rolling, being A: it was too hard to turn stopped
B: the steering arm broke once when I tried turning it when stopped.
Since then it's just been habit.
(Be it the car I was talking about was a 20 year old lead turd)
Apparently i've never been on live television before
