I believe the engine cover seals with the bonnet scoop to force air over the intercooler.

Removing it would reduce the total airflow over the intercooler.

When I upgraded my TMIC, AVO recommended trimming the engine cover over the bigger core to get the best seal.

I would only remove it if I was doing a front mount intercooler upgrade.

Or you could do what Adam has done to his Liberty. I've seen this car in the flesh and the photos don't do it justice. He cut the top part off, and left the bottom bit, so it looks kind of factory.

Below car has been gone for quite some time now... blew bottom end bearing and dealership screwed me! Now driving 2008 WRX with ~65k kms on the clock. Only has cat back exhaust and tune by KiDo at the moment! More to come... but slowly!

Purchased recently (12/11/2013), already with: Stage 2 Pedders lowered springs, rear Whiteline sway bar, Advan Racing TCII 18x8 wheels, k&N pod filter, custom 3" exhaust system from turbo back with Magnaflow mufflers. ECUTEK tune of some sort (hopefully soon to be fixed)..... now FIXED!! Now KiDo Tuned!
Added: HID kit, EZ lip equivalents to the front and sides, and various LED treatments, oem boot spoiler, [LGT WRC] plates, GFB Respons BOV for extra Pssscchhh! --> Gone... I couldn't afford it's heart transplant... but keep a look out, as it will come back on sale soon!

Thanks guys - I'll be sure to check all that out. I may have to get a temp sensor into the intercooler somehow...

Welcome mate

Some advice if I may:

1. Stay away from the avo turbo

2. From what I have seen and reading your requirements, I think the vf52 would be a good upgrade if you can get one for a reasonable price (say 750-1000). Failing that I would suggest you look at the kinugawa td05-18g bolt on. Relatively cheap and seen some pretty good results with some reliability from these, which is good considering the price

3. Go with michael's reccomendations on Dixcel - you won't regret it ;)

4. Rear swaybar, LCA bushes and some EIBACH or H&R springs with revalved bilsteins to suit are a good upgrade if you don't want to go with coilovers.

5. E85/ eflex is king so if you can find one close to you that's convenient then I would go down that path at the same time as turbo upgrade.

The only other thing i would say is you're not really going to get an early spooling, mid range punchy and hold to redline turbo unless you look at the higher end turbos and potentially twist mount it. The closest you will come to this is solid low to mid range and and ok top end with the two turbos I suggested above. Even then, you WILL run out of puff at 6500 rpm or so. If you really want the top end you will inevitably sacrifice some low end spool.

I also have my tbsti wheels up for sale so if you go to garage 88 for your brakes anytime soon ask Michael to have a look at my wheels that are there and let me know if you're interested. No real hurry to sell as I may keep them as my track wheels but id let them go for the right offer

Good luck and enjoy the modding - just hang onto your wallet on these forums there are waaaaay too many bad influences

:)

So I've heard from a number of sources. Advice taken. :)

Thanks, I'll check that out too.

I suspect only my wallet will. :)

Thanks. I remember ALKs were all the rage with the WRX boys at one stage - are they needed on a Liberty? I'll be pestering coyote about suspension :)

5. E85/ eflex is king so if you can find one close to you that's convenient then I would go down that path at the same time as turbo upgrade.

The issue is it's a family car, and it just isn't likely that I'll be able to find E85 all the time.

Yeah, I know that everything is a compromise. I was considering a ball-bearing turbo because apparently they spool a bit sooner than journal bearing units (and thus I was hoping to get the top end I want, but with a spool not much later than the VF46. But BB turbos also seem to cost a lot more, and Michael from MSR says I can get 200kW ATW with a VF52 and only sacrifice a few hundred rpm on spool, so I'll go with his recommendation.

I also have my tbsti wheels up for sale so if you go to garage 88 for your brakes anytime soon ask Michael to have a look at my wheels that are there and let me know if you're interested. No real hurry to sell as I may keep them as my track wheels but id let them go for the right offer

Don't do that to me... :P

Yeah, I get a feeling I'll be scrounging just to pay for the next fix... :P

Interesting. The price on TD05-18G turbos is crazy cheap - there's a brand new Tomioka Racing TD05-18G going on eBay at present for < $700 inc shipping. VF52s seem to be $1.1k+ - so what's the benefit of the VF52 over the TD05-18G? Some comments I've read about the TD05-18G say it actually spools faster than a VF52, and the top-end for it seems to be around 350hp (or 260kW) - will that get me to 200kW ATW (what's the accepted level of loss from flywheel to tread on a GT Spec.B with the 5EAT transmission)?

Actually, Tomioka Racing claim up to 330 whp (near enough to 250kW ATW) out of the TD05-18G. So for the price, what's wrong with it? :)

They are a cheap copy of a good turbo.!!! So its like saying BC coil overs suck cause they are Tein copies!! Yet ALOT of people have BC's and have had no problems.!!

Edit.... Im not saying BC's are a tein copy... Just using that as an example.

Don't know much about the tomioka ones although have heard relatively good things about the kinugawa. They're good value although longevity hasn't been completely tested yet I believe

The Tomioka one on eBay seems too cheap to be true - given Tomioka themselves list them for USD$1000+.

I believe the Blouche 440XT is another verison of the TD05-18G, and Blouche have a good reputation - but they're not cheap...

The autos don't need injector and fuel pump upgrades unless you plan to go north of 210kw or run E85

Jackson ran a Kando TD05-18G before his engine rebuild and got 217kw.
A VF52 would have done similar numbers with the same supporting mods.
I was considering one but MSR said they are cheaply made, won't last big kms and are very fiddly to fit.
Jackson has since upgraded to a Blouch BB turbo since the rebuild but should be able to give you good advice on Kando.
