Shell fuel is very dense and whilst it works very well if your engine is working hard, ie in the top 10% of its rev range most of the time, for normal day to day driving the fuel isn't burnt as efficiently which can leave deposits in your engine because of the unburnt additives. There's been quite a few tests done on this, give google a try, it should bring up more detailed responses.

Also, a couple of years ago MRT did a test on all the major brands of fuel and Caltex consistently gave the best results.

I hate to break it to you, but working in the oil industry myself, I will tell you that in Sydney there are 2 oil refineries, Caltex at Kurnell and Shell at Clyde. As BP don't have a refinery in Sydney, BP uses fuel made at the Shell Clyde Refinery. And as Shell don't have a refinery in Brisbane, but BP does, Shell get there fuel from the BP refinery. I do believe after the fuel is processed, BP and Shell add a few different additives, but ultimately the fuel you buy at BP and Shell in Sydney and Brisbane is very similar. Also, when refineries shut down and do not have enough stock of their own to supply, fuel is very often imported from Asian countries as a finished product. I can only assume Caltex and Mobil have a similar deal with Mobil having a refinery in Altona, Victoria.

I believe there is a thread about fuels already but here goes:

I'm a karter we use tunable 100CC Yamaha engines that produce 18 (17.6) HP at 15,000RPM. Now i know this isn't a car engine but they are extremely sensitive to fuel. The word in the paddock is that BP Ultimate and Caltex 98 give the most consistent results. This is my experience too I tried shell and it sucks ended up fouling the plug all day long because of the deposits it left behind. I also believe that there are only two refineries in Sydney Caltex and Shell However what ever they add to shell is crap and whatever they add to BP is awesome. So I stick to Caltex Vortex 98 in both the Kart and Car.

As for consumption: interestingly I have a 3.0 RB and am getting very similar consumption to you guys. City driving alone - Eastern Suburbs stop start traffic not over 50km/h i get 14 L/ 100kms. A combination of freeway driving and city driving I get 11 L/ 100kms. Driving around towns like Newcastle (Longish distances at 70/80km/h not too many traffic lights) I get between 9 and 10 L / 100km and highway driving (Sydney to Brisbane pacific Highway mostly 100Km/Hr) I get the best at around 8.2L/100km

An interesting comparison?!

I do the run from wollongong up to alexandria in sydney almost every day. around 80km each way, the first 50km is highway 110 and 100km/h zones, with hills (mount ousley etc) the last 30km of the trip is the bit between engadine and alexandria, lots of stop start and traffic.... i've been consistantly getting around 8.4 - 8.6l/100 running a variety of fuels all 98 octane though...

Superkarts? Centrifugal clutch? A housemate of 4 years ago had one of those. The amount of times we had the thing (except for the donk itself) in bits....

caltex vortex 98 now available throughout SA stores... have made the change from bp ultimate, noticed some increase in mileage... always steared clear of the shell stuff, which i have found has been better when it comes to high end rev range and performance, but quite yukky for peak city driving

Noticed this over the last week - was thinking of shifting from BP ultimate also. I see 208 AWKw in your sig - thats a nice number! What sort of work have you had done to get that, and who was the work done by?

What exactly are you breaking to me? Not sure if you still post here or will read this as I've just seen the reply date. As you have even said, the fuels all have different additives and this is where the difference lies. Some fuel is better than others.......whether it comes from the sweat of a cigar rolling big girl or the refinery in Sydney, its the stuff that comes out of the pump that matters :D

Off of the top of my head, you are looking at between 2ish and 10ish... does all depend on what you may have already done, or tweeking parts of the kit to better suit your needs or budget i guess... i'm not sure if the mrt website has prices on it...

I had already had a slight touch of work done prior to the upgrade, my bill was around 6, but it does as you could imagine, totally change the car... bigger turbo, cooler, etc etc... believe it or not though, on the topic of fuel, its still quite reasonable, hitting around 8.5 to 9km per liter... or around 11 to 12L per 100... I hate how it's displayed in the MY04 in km/L
