555/Benchmark now charge $150US which is still the best option IMHO.

Vaccine - Personally, I would rather save myself the drive to Melbourne and pay a bit more on top. I've been reading on the forum somewhere that other tuners in Sydney charge approx $1500 for tuning the 3.0, so $500 doesn't sound too deep for me and possibly others on the forums.

I know we're all eager to find a nice boost in performance without large costs associated, so please do keep us in the loop with your mates maps and let us know how much we would be looking at pitching in. Obviously, the more interested, the less we need to pay individually.

Thanks!

copying the map is the simplist solution that will cost vertually nothing.
the benifits in power simply come from running a 12.5:1 afr rather than low 10's.
timing is normally pretty good on the NA, then just tweek of the throttle map.

Benchmark Tuning, formerly 555 Motorsport do internet tunes for 150US for one month. You need a Tactrix cable and a laptop. Lets face it. We are only going to make an extra 10-12kw so why spend $500 to $1000 for very little gain.

Tom, I've looked at our car's rom. It has 6 base timing maps and 2 advance maps. I don't think much can be done as far as timing goes. I do think what gains there are to be made will come from DBW (driveablity) AVCS and leaning out the fuel maps. I've been speaking via email to Matt Cater at Benchmark now for months and he's keen to start tuning my car. He's happy to dial the car in using the oem sensors as I don't have a wideband.

For anyone who is interested there is a N/A tuning thread on the Romraider Forum. It's for 2.5 Impreza's but the same applies to our cars. http://www.romraider.com/forum/topic5394.html

why doesnt every chip in and get 1 tune, then just copy it to the other cars.
tatrix cable and a laptop is all you need with free software.
only tables that would need copying would be fuel/timing/throttle maps.
supprised no one has posted it up on here yet.

better yet, when my mate reggie comes down with his 06 spec-b in a few weeks, we can get it tuned and then i can rip the map and post up for people to have a look at. anyone wanna chip in?? :yahoo:

vinnie also doesnt take a whole day to tune car, he will have a map he has made and just flash it on.
stick car on dyno and then check for knock which there shouldnt be as he tunes are way concervative.
care to point out a dyno tuner who has achieved gains of more than 30kw (presuming they charge a grand for the work and the baseline was around 120kw) from a H6 just on a tune? I'd be excited to hear of one who has. I'd be even more excited to hear of one who has and can provide assurance that they aren't tuning too far and reducing longevity of the engine.

On the topic of copying tunes from one car to another - there's a few reasons why our cars are tuned the way they are from the factory: to account for production tolerances, differences in environments, differences in the way the vehicles are going to be driven, different fuels. Even just accounting for production tolerances there can be and often is significant differences between custom tunes for seemingly identical vehicles.

Then there's the software piracy analogy....

Good reply, Tony. For some folks, it's all about numbers. But others, it's more about driveability. Some people spend beyond $1,500 for an exhaust system which will probably barely net 10-15 kw, let alone on a NA. But response is increased and a more aggressive note is achieved. So yeah, if the numbers don't increase by much but the trade off is a more aggressive and spirited result, I'll take that any day.

Copying tunes from one car to another is common practice. Ever heard of Ecutek ? Unless you get Ecutek 3 you are paying for a generic map that's used many times over. At least with an N/A car there aren't so many variables to consider.

Custom tune is the way to go however, once a tune has been done for a particular vehicle then that same map can be used as a base for the next. I'm sure Mr Vin uses this method and does not start from scratch with every car he tunes. It would take all day if he did.

Sorry, i dont recall mentioning a 30kw gain, nor a $1000 tune.

a 3RB in QLD, NSW and VIC all have the same tunes on them.. sorry
subaru do not make individual custom tunes for each 3RB they bring out.

i was saying that paying $500 for 15-20kw was way steep for the gain. $350 is almost justifiable.

I think that what Smythie was trying to get at is that the tune itself would the the IP (Intellectual Property) of the person that created the tune. Therefore copying the tune is pirating their IP. However, that being said, how many people here have never had an MP3 on the HDD/Ipod that wasn't original/purchased? or even 1 item of commercial software that they didnt pay for.

EVERYONE would be guilty of such crimes ;)

And on the topic of custom tunes, yes you would be stupid to load another tune onto your car and drive off into the sunset thinking all is grand. HOWEVER the tunes would be close enough not to cause instant damage, and with a little logging using RomRaider, Learning View and help of others on tuning forums (such as LGT and RR) you could EASILY sort out any minor differences from car to car. This is what I'm working towards with my 2.0T - I have the help of Merchgod (for those who read RR) to setup is "stage 1" 2.0 LGT map which will be shared for all the 2.0T drivers who want it ;)

No you didn't. But you complained about paying $500 for a 15-20kw gain. Other than running down to Docklands NO ONE in Australia offers a dyno tune for even a H6 (which should apparently involve less parameters to adjust than the turbos) for less than $1000. If 15-20kw is not good enough value for money at $500 then no less than 30kw should be good enough for a 1 grand outlay. As I said, point me towards a tuner who can safely get over 30kw from a H6 using a custom tune with no other mods for a typical tuner's outlay of around $1k and I'll be one of the first to drive my car there.

[/quote]See Hotwire's comment. You are paying the tuner to do the work for you and reprogram the computer in your car. Each tuner has their own way of doing things and the money you pay them is mostly for the dyno time. You are NOT paying them for the rights to their IP. If you were, you'd be paying quite a bit more.

My comments about the relevance of a custom tune from one car on another still stand. You are taking unnecessary risks using someone else's custom tune. Amongst the currently active members (somewhere around 100 at a guess) there are no more than 5 people who are playing around with the tunes and learning view on the car themselves. Saying that someone else's custom tune can be copied for nix then relying on individuals to tweak it themselves using feedback from learning view is laughable when you consider the number of guys who have any sort of familiarity with it. Even Hotwire who is the most active in his comments on modding parameters and (in here) is second only to parso_rex in his familiarity with the available parameters is making things up as he goes. That's NOT the way to go with a custom tune that is potentially close to the edge of being dangerous for your car.
