The standard Subaru oils are;

Castrol Edge 5W-30 for the Turbo/3.0 models
Castrol Edge 10W-30 for NA 4Cyl models.

i spun a bearing a few months ago... upgraded my oil somewhat. I'll get back to you with what i am using, i forget exactly what it is.

After needed a new engine i spoke to a lot of subaru mechs, and they said that even though subaru won't admit it, the engines go through a lot of oil and you need to keep on top of it.

I use Castrol Magnatec 10W-30 which is what we use at work in all the 4 cylinders. We use Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30 in turbos and H6 engines. Even after rebuilding my engine I see no issues with the 10W-30 and its what my engine builder, and the guys at work suggested. At my initial 1,000km oil change after the engine rebuild the oil came out relatively clean, and it had only used about 300ml in the run in phase. In the next 3,000km until my logbook service (by time) it used no oil and came out black which was expected now it's run in and done quite a few kms.

Mine was using heaps and had a suspected big end knock, hence my rebuild. But now it doesn't use at drop :) Spot on the full mark every time I check it, cold and hot.

Semi Synthenic 10W-30W or 10W-40W Mobil S, GTX Magnetic or Shell Helix. Full Synthenic should not be used unless it was used from day one (car brand new). What is most critical is that you change it no later than the service intervals.

Same here. Lucky to have to top up 500ml in 10,000kms even after track days. Using 5W-30 Castrol Edge.

Seems to be luck of the draw and also how well the engine was broken in.

So went out looking for some oil. My mechanic (not Subaru) used a 'Next Service' sticker from Nulon & can assume he put in 0W-40 seeing as that's the label on the bottle on the sticker. I couldn't get 10W-30 unfortunately so got some 10w-40.

No biggie right?
